CEC Gyanesh Kumar Assumes Chairship of International IDEA, Engages with Swedish Parliament on Democracy

New Delhi, Dec 2025 : Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, who arrived in Sweden on Tuesday ahead of his official duties, met the Committee on the Constitution at the Swedish Parliament on Wednesday and held detailed discussions on various aspects of democracy.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) confirmed the engagement on X, stating, “CEC Gyanesh Kumar meets the Committee on the Constitution at the Swedish Parliament; holds discussions on various aspects of democracy.”

Earlier, CEC Kumar also unveiled a plaque at the headquarters of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) in Sweden and held a meeting with Dr. Kevin Casas-Zamora, Secretary-General of International IDEA. The CEC is set to formally assume the Chairship of International IDEA during the upcoming Council of Member States meeting in Stockholm.

As Chair, CEC Kumar will preside over all council meetings throughout 2026, guiding the organisation’s strategic and operational agenda. Established in 1995, International IDEA is an intergovernmental organisation dedicated to strengthening democratic institutions and processes worldwide. The organisation has 35 member countries, with the United States and Japan participating as Observers, and promotes inclusive, accountable, and resilient democracies.

The ECI described the Chairship as a “significant milestone,” reflecting global recognition of India’s election management body as one of the world’s most credible and innovative. India, a founding member of International IDEA, has consistently contributed to the organisation’s governance, democratic discourse, and institutional initiatives.

Under CEC Kumar’s leadership, International IDEA will benefit from India’s unparalleled experience in conducting the world’s largest elections, encompassing nearly a billion electors. The collaboration is expected to enhance knowledge sharing, strengthen professional networks among Election Management Bodies (EMBs), and support evidence-based electoral reforms globally.

The ECI noted that India will share its best practices in electoral technology and administrative innovations with EMBs worldwide. Since its inception, International IDEA has been instrumental in training election officials both within India and internationally, signing MoUs with 28 countries and training 3,169 officials from 142 countries.

During his tenure, CEC Kumar will focus on documenting and disseminating India’s innovations and best practices to support global electoral processes. This leadership role is seen as an opportunity to reinforce India’s position as a benchmark for transparent and technologically advanced election management.
