Chief Minister Inaugurates Link Road For Rubber Plantation At Chuhvel
Chuhvel, December 2025: Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma today inaugurated the link road for rubber planters at Chuhvel. The event was graced by Pu Lalthansanga, Minister for Land Resources, Soil & Water Conservation. Pu Lalfamkima, Deputy Speaker and local MLA of Chuhvel constituency, warmly welcomed the Chief Minister.
Key points highlighted by the Chief Minister:
- According to departmental assessments, Mizoram has the potential to cultivate rubber on more than 50,000 hectares. However, only a small portion of suitable land has been utilised so far.
- After discussions with Dr. Shawar Dhanania, Chairman of the India Rubber Board, the Chief Minister said the successful implementation of Chief Minister Rubber Missions in Tripura was reviewed, and the Board expressed willingness to support Mizoram in adopting best practices. A technical expert will also be deputed to guide the state. Mizoram will formally launch the Chief Minister Rubber Mission on December 16. The state has already secured Rs. 27.98 crore from NABARD to commence implementation. Under this mission, the government aims to plant rubber over more than 11,500 hectares within five years.
- Rubber grows best below 500 meters above sea level. One hectare can accommodate about 450 saplings. As per departmental findings, a mature rubber tree can yield 2–4 kg of latex annually. One hectare can produce between 1,000–2,000 kg per year. At current market rates, this amounts to an income of Rs. 1,80,000 to Rs. 3,60,000 per hectare annually.
- Rubber plantation is suitable for hilly terrain and provides steady income. It is useful for soil conservation and water retention and helps prevent land degradation.
- The Chief Minister’s Rubber Mission Phase-I began in the 2024–25 financial year, covering 24 clusters in Mamit and Kolasib districts. Rubber seedlings worth 4,50,000 have been planted over more than 1,000 hectares. In Phase-I, Mamit district has already covered 844 hectares, including 80 hectares in Chuhvel alone.
- In the 2025–26 financial year, Phase-II is underway, targeting 2,575 hectares statewide with 11,58,750 rubber seedlings. Of this, 1,316 hectares are planned for Mamit district.
- The mission not only supplies saplings but also provides tools for rubber tapping, plantation link roads, and marketing support for rubber farmers.
- The government aims to construct as many link roads as possible, especially for plantation clusters under the Rubber Mission.
- This year, roads covering 46.5 km will be constructed across rubber plantation areas in Mamit and Kolasib districts under Phase-I.
Minister Pu Lalthansanga also encouraged rubber growers to work diligently for success.
The inauguration was chaired by Pu V. Lalruatsanga, Secretary, Land Resources, Soil & Water Conservation, and the dedication prayer was offered by Upa R. Lalrinfela. A progress report was presented by Pu Lalchhuanawma, Secretary, Chuhvel Rubber Producer Society.
Under Phase-I, Chuhvel currently has 80 rubber growers. Each household received about 450 saplings in July this year. They received Rs. 40,320 in the first installment and Rs. 20,160 in the second installment in November. The newly inaugurated 7.5 km link road, constructed at a cost of about Rs. 18.9 lakh, was funded through farmers’ contributions. The road now fully connects the 80 rubber plantations in Chuhvel.
