Kopra Reservoir Becomes Chhattisgarh’s First Ramsar Site

Raipur, Dec 2025 – The Kopra Reservoir in Bilaspur district has been designated as Chhattisgarh’s first Ramsar site, bringing widespread joy across the state. This status is conferred on wetlands that are globally significant for biodiversity, water conservation, and environmental importance.

Forest and Climate Change Minister Mr. Kedar Kashyap congratulated the people of the state on this achievement, calling it a matter of pride for Chhattisgarh. He stated that the reservoir’s unique ecology, diversity of resident and migratory birds, and the richness of its aquatic ecosystem made it worthy of Ramsar recognition.

Minister Kashyap also thanked the State Wetland Authority, environmentalists, forest department officials, researchers, and local communities, emphasizing that this achievement was possible due to their collective effort and commitment to conservation.

He highlighted that under the leadership of Chief Minister Mr. Vishnu Dev Sai, this recognition is a significant step toward the goal of designating 20 wetlands as Ramsar sites by 2030 under the Chhattisgarh Anjor Vision 2047. The Ramsar status of Kopra Reservoir will raise awareness about wetland conservation in the state and create new opportunities for eco-tourism, providing employment for local communities and promoting sustainable development.

Minister Kashyap appealed to all citizens to actively participate in the protection and preservation of this important natural heritage. He stressed that conserving wetlands is our responsibility and a commitment to leaving a strong natural legacy for future generations.
