Japan Experts Conduct Training Programme for Mizo Coaches; Sports & Youth Services Minister Inaugurates the Initiative

Aizawl, December 2025: As part of ongoing efforts to transform the sports landscape of Mizoram, a special training programme for sports coaches titled “Transforming Sport for the Next Generation: Developing Decision Makers” was inaugurated today by Sports & Youth Services Minister Pu Lalnghinglova Hmar at Hawla Indoor Stadium, Republic Vengthlang. The training is being conducted by experts from Japan.

The coaching programme has been jointly organised by the Mizoram State Sports Council (MSSC), Nippon Sports Science University (NSSU), and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Prof. Masamitsu Ito from Nippon Sports Science University, Tokyo, is leading the training as the chief resource person. He is being supported by Ms. Tanako Ayako, Project Coordinator, NSSU; Mr. Eiji Wakamatsu, Senior Representative, JICA; Mr. Mikinori Hirano, JOCV (Rugby Coach), JICA; and Mr. Joyota Rabha, Additional Lead Project Officer, JICA. The training programme will continue until December 18.

In his address, Sports Minister Pu Lalnghinglova Hmar said it was a matter of great pride and happiness for Mizoram to receive training from world-class sports experts and coaches. He noted that such high-quality international training, which would otherwise be difficult to afford, was being provided free of cost, and urged the participating coaches to make the best use of this opportunity through sincere and dedicated learning.

The Minister emphasised that good athletes can only be developed through good coaches, and that strengthening coaching standards is essential for progress in sports. He said that continuing with the existing approach would not yield improved results, and Mizoram must adopt new thinking and methods to move forward. Referring to India’s overall progress in sports, he said that unless Mizoram keeps pace with this growth, it would continue to remain around the lower ranks, such as 28th place, in national competitions like the National Games. He stressed that sports development should not be limited to infrastructure alone, but must give equal importance to quality coaching.

Highlighting the need for expertise, Pu Lalnghinglova Hmar said that learning from experienced professionals is vital for advancement in sports, and encouraged coaches to effectively apply the knowledge gained from international experts.

JICA India Senior Representative Mr. Eiji Wakamatsu, along with his team, was also present at the programme. He spoke about JICA’s involvement in various development initiatives in Mizoram and noted that this was JICA’s first major engagement in the sports sector in the state. He expressed happiness that, after several meetings and discussions with the Mizoram Sports Minister, the initiative had finally materialised. Mr. Wakamatsu said Mizoram has immense potential in sports and expressed confidence that meaningful progress would be achieved through collaborative efforts. He also reaffirmed JICA’s willingness to continue cooperation in the sports sector.

The programme was chaired by MSSC Secretary Pu Henry C. Lalrawnkima. Senior Sports Promotion Officer Pu Albert Lalnunpuia presented a report on the preparations for the programme, while Sports Promotion Officer Pu H. Laldinsanga delivered the vote of thanks, bringing the event to a close.

Team Maverick.
