Cameron Green Tops IPL Auction as Young Indian Talent Makes History at Abu Dhabi Mini Auction
Abu Dhabi, Dec 2025 : The IPL 2026 mini-auction at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday turned into a historic event, with franchises splashing big money to secure top talent, both international stars and emerging Indian players. The spotlight shone brightly on Australia’s all-rounder Cameron Green, who was acquired by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for a staggering Rs. 25.20 crore, making him the third most expensive player in IPL history.
Green’s acquisition highlights KKR’s aggressive approach towards bolstering their squad with versatile players capable of impacting matches in multiple departments. His performance in recent international and domestic leagues, coupled with his proven record as a formidable all-rounder, justified the massive investment. Cricket fans across the globe were captivated as the news of Green’s record fee spread.
The mini-auction also became a platform for emerging Indian talent to shine. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) made headlines by acquiring Uttar Pradesh all-rounder Prashant Veer and Rajasthan power-hitter Kartik Sharma for a record Rs. 14.20 crore each. These two players, both uncapped, became the highest-paid uncapped players in IPL history. Veer, a 20-year-old left-arm spinner and middle-order batter, saw his value skyrocket 47.3 times from his base price of Rs. 30 lakh. CSK fought off early interest from Rajasthan Royals and a late, intense bidding challenge from Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to secure him.
Prashant Veer first came to prominence representing Noida Super Kings in the UP T20 League and has since consistently impressed in domestic cricket. In just 12 T20 matches, he has scored 112 runs at a strike rate of 167.16 and taken 12 wickets in nine innings at an economy of 6.45. His consistent performances in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy further enhanced his reputation, and CSK views him as a potential long-term successor to Ravindra Jadeja.
Moments after securing Veer, CSK matched their investment by signing Kartik Sharma, a powerful middle-order batsman and wicketkeeper, for the same Rs. 14.20 crore. Sharma has already made a name for himself in domestic white-ball cricket. In 12 T20 matches, he has scored 334 runs at a strike rate of 164, hitting 28 sixes and consistently showcasing his ability to change the game in the lower-middle order. His explosive hitting and reliability behind the stumps made him a highly sought-after talent in the auction, with CSK, Mumbai Indians (MI), Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), and KKR engaged in intense bidding for his services. Sharma also trained with the CSK squad in the previous season, impressing coaches and domestic observers with his adaptability against both pace and spin.
For cricket fans in Jammu & Kashmir, the mini-auction brought historic news as well. Pacer Auqib Nabi from Baramulla district was bought by Delhi Capitals for Rs. 8.40 crore, making him one of the most expensive uncapped Indian seamers ever. Nabi has been in sensational form in domestic tournaments, including the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Ranji Trophy. In the T20 league stage, he took 15 wickets in seven matches at an economy of 7.41, and in his most recent match against Madhya Pradesh, he contributed with both bat and ball, scoring 32 runs off 21 balls before taking three crucial wickets to secure the win.
Nabi’s Ranji Trophy performances have been equally impressive. In the 2025-26 season, he claimed 29 wickets in nine innings, including three five-wicket hauls and a remarkable 7 for 24 against Rajasthan, helping Jammu & Kashmir reach the knockout stages. This followed his exceptional 2024-25 Ranji season, where he ended as the top-performing seamer with 44 wickets at an average of 13.93, outpacing other prominent bowlers nationwide. Cricket enthusiasts across J&K, particularly in Baramulla, celebrated his achievement, recognizing the milestone in the region’s cricketing history.
The auction also featured other major international names. Sri Lanka’s Matheesha Pathirana was signed by KKR for Rs. 18 crore, making him the highest-paid Sri Lankan player in IPL history. CSK’s strategic focus on investing in young domestic talent, combined with franchises securing international stars, reflects a growing trend in the IPL where teams aim to balance experience with potential match-winners who can change games single-handedly.
Overall, the auction was highly competitive, with all 10 IPL franchises filling all 77 available slots, collectively spending Rs. 215.45 crore. This underscores the immense value placed on both proven international stars and emerging domestic talent.
