Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi sentenced to 17 years in Toshakhana-2 case
Islamabad, Dec 2025 : In a major development, a Pakistani court on Saturday sentenced former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi to 17 years in prison in the Toshakhana-2 corruption case. The sentencing was reported by local media and marks a significant escalation in the legal troubles facing the former premier.
The case revolves around an expensive jewellery set gifted to Imran Khan by the Saudi crown prince during an official visit in May 2021. Prosecutors argued that the gift, which held high monetary value, was later purchased at a nominal price in violation of Toshakhana rules, resulting in financial loss to the national treasury.
The verdict was announced by Judge Central Shahrukh Arjumand of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA)’s special court. Proceedings were held inside Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail, where Imran has been incarcerated.
Under the court’s ruling, Imran Khan received a total sentence of 17 years, including 10 years of rigorous imprisonment under relevant sections of the Pakistan Penal Code, and an additional seven years under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Bushra Bibi was handed the same sentence under corresponding legal provisions.
Both Imran and Bushra were also fined Rs 16.4 million. In case of non-payment, the court ordered further imprisonment.
According to a report by leading Pakistani daily Dawn, the court said it had taken a “lenient view” while determining the punishment, citing Imran’s age and Bushra’s gender as mitigating factors.
Legal teams representing Imran and Bushra immediately announced that they would challenge the verdict in the high court. Both were indicted in December last year, and during hearings in October, they had pleaded not guilty, describing the allegations as “fabricated and politically motivated.”
Recordings presented to the court showed Imran rejecting the prosecution’s claims, calling the case “malicious, fabricated, and politically engineered.” He argued that he did not fall under the definition of “public servant” as per the Pakistan Penal Code and claimed that he had no detailed knowledge of the gift at the time it was presented to his wife.
Imran insisted that all actions regarding the jewellery followed the country’s Toshakhana Policy 2018. He stated that the gift had been reported, assessed, and retained lawfully after making the required payment to the national exchequer.
“We complied with the Toshakhana Policy in letter and spirit,” he asserted before the court.
The verdict adds to the intensifying legal and political uncertainty in Pakistan, as the PTI founder remains embroiled in multiple high-profile cases ahead of future electoral contests.
