Japan Ushering A New Horizon Remaining Resilient In the Present Geopolitical Scenario.

Tokyo; December 2025: Japan’s strong economy and impressive government capabilities, which provides a foundation while bolstering a magnitudal potentiality in mitigating foreign pressures, while handling that of China.

Japan has long been one of the most important U.S. allies, and its importance is growing as U.S.-China competition dominates U.S. strategic thinking. Beijing may try to coerce Tokyo because of:

  • the close U.S.-Japan security relationship;
  • Japan’s disputes with China that are independent of the U.S.- Japan security relationship;
  • Japan’s inclination towards Taiwan, whom China consider its shadow.

Nevertheless, Japan would benefit from additional preparatory measures for many national security–related contingencies. While assessing Japan’s national preparedness and identifies areas of relative strength and vulnerability, focusing on resilience in the context of demanding national security scenarios such as a Chinese invasion or blockade of Taiwan or Chinese pressure on Japan over contested islands.

In remaining truly prepared in the face of Chinese pressure, the Japanese administration should place equal emphasis on security-related disasters and natural disasters; provide consistent resources to local governments on security-related issues; and clarify responsibilities for issues such as combating disinformation in a crisis. These and other measures will help bolster relatively undeveloped elements of national security resilience that China or another foe may seek to exploit.

Counterfeiting possible Chinese shadow war on Taiwan, it is omnipotent for Japan to understand that there remains a void in U.S. and international attention to systematically assess Taiwan’s resilience and developing a comprehensive assistance plan to improve it. Taiwan’s geopolitical, technological, and economic importance in the Indo-Pacific region has made it a focal point of U.S. strategic interests, especially in countering Chinese influence and aggression. Taiwan has taken important steps to strengthen resilience over the last several years. However, the threat it faces is significant, and it falls short in many important dimensions of resilience. The question of the readiness and resolve of Taiwan’s civilian population to resist in the event of foreign aggression also remains concerning.

To help improve resilience in Taiwan, both Japan and the United States should

  • raising threat awareness among the people of Taiwan through a more systematic strategic communications plan;
  • improving ties to the private sector, including companies involved in critical infrastructure;
  • bolstering Taiwan’s energy infrastructure, especially in such areas as the power grid; and
  • increasing strategic reserves and redundancy of food and energy.

These and other steps would not only help strengthen Taiwan’s will and ability to resist external pressure, influence, and potential invasion but also bolster deterrence by raising the costs and risks for an aggressor, reducing the overall risk of conflict.

Team Maverick.
