India Women Take 2-0 Lead with Seven-Wicket Win Over Sri Lanka in 2nd T20I

Visakhapatnam, Dec 2025 : The Indian women’s cricket team registered a convincing seven-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the second T20I at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, taking a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.

Sri Lanka, electing to bat after losing the toss, struggled to build momentum and were restricted to 128 for 9 in their 20 overs. The team suffered an early blow as Vishmi Gunaratne fell for 1 with the score at just two. Captain Chamari Athapaththu tried to stabilise the innings, adding 36 runs for the second wicket alongside Hasini Perera. Athapaththu contributed 31 runs, while Perera scored 22, forming a 44-run partnership for the third wicket with Harshitha Samarawickrama. Harshitha (33) then added 22 runs with Kavisha Dilhari (14), but the innings collapsed in the latter stages.

India’s bowlers dominated, with Vaishnavi Sharma and Shree Charani taking two wickets each. Kranti Gaud and Sneh Rana claimed a wicket apiece, ensuring Sri Lanka failed to post a challenging total.

In response, India chased down the target comfortably in just 11.5 overs. Openers Shefali Verma and Smriti Mandhana put on 29 runs in 3.1 overs before Mandhana was dismissed for 14 off 11 balls. Shefali Verma then built a crucial 58-run partnership with Jemimah Rodrigues, who scored 26 off 15 balls, including a six and four boundaries, taking India closer to the target.

Shefali, unbeaten on 69 off 34 balls with 12 boundaries, combined with captain Harmanpreet Kaur to forge a 41-run stand that virtually sealed the match. India needed only one run to win when Harmanpreet (10) was bowled, and Richa Ghosh completed the chase with the final run. For Sri Lanka, Malki Madara, Kavya Kavindi, and Kavisha Dilhari picked up a wicket each.

This win follows India’s eight-wicket triumph in the series opener, reinforcing their dominance over the visitors. With two consecutive wins, India is now well-placed to secure the series. The third T20I is scheduled to be played on December 26 in Thiruvananthapuram, where Team India will aim to continue their winning streak and clinch the series.

India’s clinical performance with both bat and ball highlights their strong form ahead of the remaining fixtures, showcasing the depth and talent of the team.

Team Maverick.
