Senator Wicker Hails Western Unity, Urges Stronger Support for Ukraine
Washington, Jan 2026 : A powerful U.S. Senator welcomed reports that the United States, Ukraine, and European allies have aligned behind a shared negotiating position to end the war in Ukraine, highlighting that Western cohesion has shifted the balance of power against Russia.
“I welcome reports that the United States, Ukraine, and Europe have coalesced around a common negotiating position to end Putin’s war of aggression,” said Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Roger Wicker, emphasizing the importance of a united front.
“The West’s demonstration of unity sends a clear signal to Putin. His plan to divide us will fail,” Wicker added, underscoring that collective resolve strengthens diplomatic leverage.
Wicker credited former President Donald Trump with fostering this alignment, stating, “President Trump has succeeded in fostering unity, which allows the West to engage Putin from a position of strength.” The Mississippi senator stressed that the Western coalition now presents a firm, coordinated stance in ongoing diplomatic and security efforts.
Rejecting Moscow’s narrative, Wicker described Russian claims as misleading. “Putin, ever the KGB agent, continues to peddle a false narrative,” he said. “He wants the world to believe that Russia will inevitably achieve its military objectives in Ukraine. The facts on the ground tell a very different story.”
Highlighting recent battlefield developments, the Senator noted, “Ukraine has successfully retaken Kupiansk, and Russia remains unable to seize Pokrovsk. Both instances demonstrate that Putin’s narrative rings hollow.” He added, “Putin cannot generate the combat power needed to achieve his maximalist political goals. Ukraine continues to out-innovate Russia on the battlefield.”
Wicker praised European partners for responding to the call for stronger defense collaboration. “At President Trump’s urging, our European allies have taken significant steps to rebuild their industrial base alongside the United States,” he said, framing Western cooperation as a cornerstone of strategic strength.
He also accused Moscow of spreading misinformation to undermine diplomacy. “Putin understands the unity of the West as the greatest threat to his ambitions,” Wicker said, noting that recent allegations of Ukrainian attacks near Putin’s residence in Novograd were “unsubstantiated” and served as “an obvious pretext for rejecting President Trump’s peace terms.”
Affirming Ukraine’s readiness for a negotiated settlement on fair terms, the Senator highlighted that President Volodymyr Zelensky has shown willingness to make public concessions. “But any settlement should not compel Kyiv to surrender territory. Ukraine must not be forced to cede unoccupied land to the Russians,” Wicker warned.
The Senator urged the United States to enhance military support for Ukraine, calling for increased aid that includes air defense systems and long-range strike capabilities. He stressed that credible security guarantees are essential to any lasting cessation of hostilities. Wicker welcomed Trump’s proposal to submit such guarantees to the Senate, noting that their approval would demonstrate “broad, bipartisan support for Ukraine.”
“It is time to end this war,” Wicker said. “But the end of hostilities must not reward the aggressor or leave the victim to suffer further.”
The Russia-Ukraine conflict, which began in February 2022, is the largest war in Europe since World War II, displacing millions and reshaping security discussions across the continent and within NATO. Since the invasion, the United States has provided billions of dollars in military and economic assistance to Kyiv. European nations have similarly increased defense spending, coordinated arms production, and continued diplomatic efforts to bring an end to the fighting.
“The West’s demonstration of unity sends a clear signal to Putin. His plan to divide us will fail,” Wicker reiterated, framing Western cohesion as the decisive factor in maintaining pressure on Moscow while supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty.
