Sonia Gandhi Stable, Responding Well to Treatment: Hospital

New Delhi, Jan 2026 : Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi’s health condition is “absolutely stable” and she is responding well to treatment, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital said in a medical bulletin issued on Tuesday, reassuring party leaders and supporters after news of her hospitalisation triggered concern.

According to the hospital’s statement, Sonia Gandhi was admitted at around 10 p.m. on Monday after she experienced respiratory discomfort. Doctors conducted a detailed medical evaluation and found a mild exacerbation of her bronchial asthma. The condition, the hospital said, was primarily triggered by the prevailing cold weather and high levels of air pollution in the national capital.

Sir Ganga Ram Hospital Chairman Dr Ajay Swaroop said that she was admitted as a precautionary measure to ensure close observation and timely treatment. “At present, her condition is absolutely stable. She is responding well to treatment and is being managed with antibiotics and other supportive medications,” the statement said.

The hospital further added that all her vital parameters are within normal limits and are being continuously monitored by a dedicated medical team. Doctors are assessing her progress on a regular basis, and a decision regarding her discharge will be taken based on her clinical improvement. “She is likely to be discharged within the next day or two, subject to the treating physicians’ assessment,” the statement noted.

The medical update is expected to ease concerns within the Congress party, as reports of Sonia Gandhi’s admission late Monday night had prompted an outpouring of messages wishing her a speedy recovery. Senior party leaders have remained in touch with the family and hospital authorities to receive updates on her health.

Sonia Gandhi, who turned 79 in December, has continued to remain politically active despite her age and health considerations. On December 28, she attended the 140th Foundation Day celebrations of the Indian National Congress, where she took part in a flag-hoisting ceremony at the party’s new headquarters, Indira Bhavan, in New Delhi.

A day earlier, on December 27, she was present at the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting held at the same venue. During the meeting, the CWC unanimously pledged to oppose what it described as a “conspiracy to turn rights into charity,” raising slogans of “Jai Samvidhan – Jai Hind.”

In December, Sonia Gandhi had also issued a strong statement criticising the Centre over the passage of the VB-G RAM G Bill in Parliament. She accused the government of weakening India’s rights-based legislative framework, particularly targeting proposed changes to the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and other key welfare laws.
