CM Dr. Yadav Visits Assam’s Silk Village Sualkuchi, Interacts with Weavers

Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav toured Sualkuchi, a historic and culturally significant centre located near Guwahati, during his visit on Thursday. Popularly known as the ‘Silk Village’, Sualkuchi is renowned for its centuries-old silk weaving tradition. Chief Minister Dr. Yadav closely observed the traditional silk production process and gained detailed insights into the intricacies of the craft.

Chief Minister Impressed by the Skill of Weavers

Chief Minister Dr. Yadav visited the homes and workshops of local weavers in Sualkuchi and witnessed how, in almost every household, artistic creations are woven on handlooms while preserving a rich cultural legacy. Interacting directly with the weavers, he appreciated their hard work and craftsmanship, noting that the traditional weaving techniques practised here are not only a fine example of artistic excellence but also a strong backbone of the local economy.

Sualkuchi Known as the “Manchester of the East”

Located about 35 kilometres from Guwahati, Sualkuchi is often referred to as the ‘Manchester of the East’. The village enjoys global recognition for its distinctive silk weaving techniques. Three major varieties of silk are produced here—Muga (golden), Pat (ivory-white) and Eri (light beige), all of which form an integral part of Assam’s cultural identity.

Visit to Museum and Textile Art Centres

During the visit, Chief Minister Dr. Yadav also toured the Bastra Udyan and the Aamar Sualkuchi Museum. He was particularly impressed by the exhibitions showcasing handloom activities and the gradual evolution of this craft. The Chief Minister also learned about the production processes of traditional garments such as Mekhela Chador, sarees, kurtas, and gamchas.

The objective of Chief Minister Dr. Yadav’s visit was to understand the best practices of traditional arts and cottage industries in other states and to draw upon these experiences for the benefit and advancement of the craft sector in Madhya Pradesh.
