Jemimah Rodrigues Begins Captaincy Journey as DC Opt to Bowl Against MI
Navi Mumbai, Jan 2026 : Jemimah Rodrigues began her tenure as Delhi Capitals captain on a confident note by winning the toss and choosing to bowl against defending champions Mumbai Indians in a key Women’s Premier League clash at the DY Patil Stadium on Saturday. The match marked a significant milestone for Rodrigues, who became the youngest captain in the history of the WPL.
Speaking after the toss, Jemimah revealed Delhi Capitals’ team combination, naming Laura Wolvaardt, Chinelle Henry, Marizanne Kapp and Lizelle Lee as the four overseas players for the contest. Young pacer Nandini Sharma was also handed her tournament debut, underlining DC’s intent to infuse fresh energy into the side early in the season.
Reflecting on the significance of the venue, Jemimah said the DY Patil Stadium holds special memories for her. She recalled making her Test debut at the ground, lifting her first World Cup trophy there, and now leading Delhi Capitals for the first time at the same venue. The captain expressed that these milestones made the occasion even more meaningful and motivating.
Rodrigues spoke candidly about her leadership journey, noting that she has been captaining her state side since the age of 16. Those early experiences, she said, have shaped her approach to leadership and decision-making. According to her, responsibility tends to bring out the best in her game, and the strong backing from her teammates has allowed her to enjoy the role without added pressure.
She also highlighted the positive environment within the squad, pointing to the blend of domestic and overseas players who have worked hard in preparation for the season. Jemimah said the team carries a sense of fresh enthusiasm, which she is eager to see translate into performances on the field.
Mumbai Indians, meanwhile, entered the match looking to rebound from a narrow three-wicket loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their opening fixture on Friday. Despite the short turnaround between matches, MI captain Harmanpreet Kaur stressed the importance of learning from setbacks and approaching the contest with renewed focus.
Harmanpreet confirmed that left-arm spinner Triveni Vasistha would make her WPL debut, replacing Saika Ishaque in the playing XI. She added that Mumbai would have preferred to chase had they won the toss, but was satisfied with the pitch conditions, which she felt looked good for batting.
The MI skipper acknowledged the challenge of limited recovery time but emphasised the professionalism of the squad. She noted that coming into each game with a fresh mindset is essential in a fast-paced tournament like the WPL, especially when fixtures come in quick succession.
With both teams featuring a strong mix of experience and emerging talent, the contest promised to be an engaging battle. Delhi Capitals looked to make an early statement under new leadership, while Mumbai Indians aimed to reassert themselves after an opening loss.
