DM&R Minister Prof. Lalnilawma Visits Site of Sihphir Neihbawih Quarry Accident

Aizawl, January 2026 : DM&R Minister Prof. Lalnilawma on Monday afternoon visited the site of the quarry accident at Sihphir Neihbawih at around 3:30 pm to assess the situation on the ground. Expressing deep concern over the tragic incident, he conveyed his sympathy to the bereaved families and the residents of Sihphir village. He also appreciated the efforts of those involved in the rescue operations, including the local community of Sihphir, members of the CYMA, various government departments, the Quick Response Team (QRT), and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), who have been working tirelessly to recover the missing persons.

The minister stated that the incident was unfortunate and assured that all necessary steps were being taken. He said the government had responded promptly by deploying officials from the ADDMA and the DM&R department, along with the QRT and NDRF, to the site immediately after receiving information about the mishap. The QRT and NDRF teams have been receiving active support from the CYMA and the local residents of Sihphir, who have been assisting in every possible way.

Rescue operations to trace the two missing persons are still underway. Officials from the DC office, the DM&R Department, and the Geology and Mining Department are continuously monitoring the situation at the site and supervising the ongoing efforts.

According to available information, the quarry accident claimed four victims. One person, identified as Pu Muana from Manipur, survived the incident. Another injured male victim is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital. However, two individuals were buried under the debris following the accident and remain missing. Efforts to locate them are continuing. The missing persons are reported to be from Chakma community and Jharkhand state.

During his visit, Prof. Lalnilawma also extended immediate relief assistance to the leaders of Sihphir village. He handed over an amount of ₹10,000 as support for firewood and other essential needs of the affected community.

It may be noted that Home Minister Pu K. Sapdanga and Forest Minister Pu Lalthansanga had earlier visited the site of the quarry accident as well. They too had provided financial assistance to the leaders of Sihphir village to help meet immediate requirements, including arrangements for firewood and basic necessities.

The government has reiterated its commitment to continue rescue operations until the missing persons are traced and to extend all possible support to the affected families and the local community.
