Trump Calls on Iranians to Sustain Protests as UN Condemns Violent Crackdown
Washington, Jan 2026 : US President Donald J. Trump on Tuesday openly urged protesters in Iran to continue demonstrations against the country’s leadership, taking a sharp public stance amid ongoing unrest. In a series of strong remarks on social media, Trump said he had cancelled all meetings with Iranian officials until what he described as the “senseless killing of protesters” comes to an end.
Addressing demonstrators directly, Trump wrote, “Iranian Patriots, KEEP PROTESTING – TAKE OVER YOUR INSTITUTIONS!!!” He further warned those responsible for violence against protesters, saying, “Save the names of the killers and abusers. They will pay a big price.” The message marked one of Trump’s most direct appeals to people inside Iran since the protests began.
Trump stated that his administration had adopted a tough diplomatic posture in response to the situation. “I have cancelled all meetings with Iranian Officials until the senseless killing of protesters STOPS,” he said. However, he did not specify which meetings were cancelled or whether any formal diplomatic engagements were scheduled at the time.
While stopping short of outlining concrete measures, Trump signalled support for the protest movement, adding, “HELP IS ON ITS WAY,” and ending his post with the slogan “MIGA!!!” or “Make Iran Great Again.” The remarks reflect a clear escalation in rhetoric as demonstrations continue to spread across Iran.
The protests, which began on December 28, 2025, were initially triggered by severe economic distress, including record inflation, rising unemployment, and a sharp collapse of the national currency. Over time, they have expanded into broader expressions of dissent, with demonstrators calling for major political and governance reforms. Protests have been reported from multiple cities and towns, indicating widespread public anger.
Meanwhile, United Nations human rights experts on Tuesday strongly condemned what they described as serious human rights violations during the nationwide demonstrations. In a statement, the experts called for immediate steps to protect protesters and uphold fundamental rights, including the right to life and liberty.
“The use of lethal force against peaceful protesters, arbitrary arrests – including of children – and attacks on medical facilities represent clear violations of international human rights law,” the experts said. They emphasised that states are obligated to prevent arbitrary deprivation of life and must ensure the protection of civilians during public demonstrations.
According to the UN experts, Iranian authorities initially appeared to exercise restraint, but the situation has deteriorated sharply in recent days. Security forces are reported to have used excessive and lethal force against largely peaceful protesters, including firing rifles and shotguns loaded with metal pellets, deploying tear gas and water cannons, and carrying out physical beatings.
As international scrutiny intensifies, Trump’s remarks and the UN’s condemnation have placed renewed global focus on Iran’s handling of the protests and the growing demands of its citizens.
