Last Day for Tamil Nadu Voters to Apply or Update Electoral Roll
Chennai, Jan 2026 : Sunday marks the final opportunity for eligible citizens in Tamil Nadu to apply for inclusion in the electoral roll or to submit requests for corrections, as the Election Commission of India (ECI) concludes the current phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.
According to the ECI, applications for adding new voters, deleting names, or making changes related to address and personal details will not be accepted after Sunday. Officials emphasised that those who miss this deadline will need to wait for the next revision cycle, underlining the importance of acting promptly.
The ongoing revision exercise aims to ensure that the state’s voter list is accurate, updated, and free of ineligible entries ahead of upcoming elections. As part of this effort, the draft electoral roll was published on January 19. During verification, approximately 9.7 million names were removed from the draft list.
Election officials explained that these deletions primarily included deceased voters, individuals who had relocated, and duplicate or otherwise ineligible entries identified through field-level checks. Following the draft’s publication, the Commission opened a window for claims and objections, allowing citizens to check their entries, request corrections, or apply for inclusion.
To facilitate maximum participation, special voter registration camps were organised across Tamil Nadu on Saturday and Sunday. These camps enabled citizens to submit applications at local polling stations and designated centres, making the process more accessible to rural and urban voters alike.
The response to the revision drive has been substantial. So far, about 1.28 million applications have been received for inclusion in the voter list. These applications will now be scrutinised by electoral registration officers before the preparation of the final roll.
Citizens were urged to verify their details through official channels and ensure that all corrections or additions are submitted before the deadline. The Election Commission has emphasised that accuracy in the electoral roll is critical to the democratic process, ensuring that every eligible voter is able to participate.
The final electoral roll will be published on February 17, after which it will be used for all electoral purposes. Officials noted that the Special Intensive Revision exercise is a crucial step toward strengthening democracy by maintaining a voter list that is both comprehensive and accurate, reflecting the true electorate of Tamil Nadu.
