Bajaj Pune Grand Tour 2026: Prologue Race Showcases a Glimpse of Grandeur

Fierce competition for the title among 28 teams from 35 countries in the event beginning Tuesday

Pune, Jan 2026 : The prologue race held today under the international cycling event Bajaj Pune Grand Tour 2026 highlighted the grandeur of the organisation and its world-class standards. A total of 164 international cyclists from 28 renowned teams representing 35 countries across the globe are participating in the competition and will battle for the title over a challenging journey of approximately 437 kilometres through the ghat roads of the Sahyadri ranges.

The 7.5-kilometre prologue (time trial) race, which served as an exciting curtain-raiser to the competition, began at 1.30 pm. Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar officially flagged off the first participant at the iconic Gopal Krishna Gokhale Chowk in the city. On the occasion, Pune Divisional Commissioner Dr. Chandrakant Pulkundwar, Pune Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram, District Collector Jitendra Dudi, State Sports and Youth Welfare Commissioner Mrs. Sheetal Teli-Ugale, District Council Chief Executive Officer Gajanan Patil, along with several senior officials, were present.

In the prologue race, competitors started individually at one-minute intervals. This was not a mass-start race, and each cyclist’s individual timing was decisive. Citizens of Pune enthusiastically welcomed the cyclists as they passed through the city’s central roads.

In the subsequent stages of the competition, cyclists from Asia (78), Europe (69), and from Oceania, America, and Africa are participating. India’s Indian Development Team has also joined this prestigious international competition, which is set to become a milestone for domestic cycling in the country.

From a security perspective, a tight deployment of around 1,500 police personnel was in place along the race route. This included local police, the crime branch, the special branch, bomb disposal squads, and the quick response force. Separate planning was undertaken for traffic management. Emergency medical services, ambulances, and technical support teams were also kept ready.

The Bajaj Pune Grand Tour 2026, being held from Tuesday, January 20 to January 23, 2026, is expected to give a new dimension to sports, tourism, and the global identity of Pune and its surrounding regions. Today’s prologue was merely a prelude to this grand international cycling event, while the competition unfolding over the Sahyadri ghat roads in the coming days is set to be even more thrilling.

Resonance of Dhol-Tasha and Shivgarjana

At the time of the inauguration of the competition, the Gopal Krishna Gokhale area reverberated with the beats of dhol-tasha. The thunderous chants of “Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Ki Jai” infused the atmosphere with a unique energy. To traditional Marathi rhythms, Punekars warmly welcomed the international cyclists. As the names of Indian players were announced, the crowd erupted in applause, boosting the morale of the athletes.

Citizens lined both sides of the roads, showcasing their enthusiasm, sporting spirit, and hospitality to the global athletes. Youngsters thronged the area to capture photographs of the players on their mobile phones. Sports enthusiasts cheered and encouraged cyclists from various countries. Moved by the affectionate response of Punekars, many cyclists waved back in acknowledgement.

Mascot Adding Colour to the Event

The colourful mascot of the Bajaj Pune Grand Tour became a major attraction for those present. Citizens crowded around to take selfies with the mascot. This moment, which gave the sporting event a festive atmosphere, brought smiles to everyone’s faces. On this occasion, Maharashtra’s ‘Shekru’ reached the international stage. The competition strengthens the bond between nature and sports, and ‘Indu’ symbolizes this connection. Through this, a message was conveyed that the Shekru, found roaming in the Sahyadri hills, is ready to welcome cyclists passing through this route.

A Beautiful Blend of Tradition and Modernity

Traditional Marathi attire, saffron turbans, dhol-tasha, and at the same time an international-standard cycling race—this beautiful blend was witnessed on the streets of Pune. By respecting tradition while promoting modern sports culture, the competition is expected to boost tourism. Through this, players from across the world will also experience the renowned hospitality of Punekars. This Marathi-style welcome marked a graceful beginning to that experience.
