Swedish Foreign Minister Speaks With Moroccan Foreign Minister.
Stockholm; January 2026: Sweden Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard spoke by telephone with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita on January 19th. The conversation focused on bilateral cooperation and the Western Sahara issue. Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and the situation in Gaza were also discussed. Appreciation was expressed for bilateral cooperation in a number of areas such as trade, migration and the fight against organized crime.
Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard stressed the importance of a just, sustainable and mutually acceptable solution to the Western Sahara issue, in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions and the UN Charter. Full support was given to the UN Special Envoy for Western Sahara Staffan de Mistura and his work.
In the conversation, Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard, in light of Security Council Resolution 2797, expressed support for Morocco’s autonomy plan as a credible basis for negotiations to reach a mutually accepted, sustainable and just political solution in accordance with the UN Charter and that satisfies the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination. She also emphasized that she looked forward to receiving Morocco’s updated proposal for the autonomy plan, as well as other constructive contributions from the parties.
The Ministers reaffirmed their commitment to international law, including the UN Charter, as an essential tool for achieving peaceful resolution of conflicts. They expressed their support for initiatives that respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and lead to a just and sustainable peace. Gaza was also discussed, including continued commitment to the implementation of the peace plan in accordance with international law and humanitarian principles, and to taking concrete steps towards a two-state solution.

Sweden has repeatedly stressed the importance of a just, sustainable and mutually acceptable solution to the Western Sahara issue, in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions and the UN Charter. Sweden fully supports the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Western Sahara and his work to achieve a political solution within the framework of the UN-led process. Sweden expresses support for Morocco’s autonomy plan, in light of the recently adopted Security Council resolution 2797, as a credible basis for negotiations to reach a mutually accepted, sustainable and just political solution in accordance with the UN Charter and which satisfies the right of the Western Sahara people to self-determination. Sweden calls on the parties to engage in negotiations, in accordance with Security Council resolution 2797, and looks forward to receiving Morocco’s updated proposals, as well as other constructive contributions from the parties.
