Bellasis Flyover Reconstruction Completed Ahead of Schedule, Set to Reopen

Mumbai, Jan 2026 : The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has successfully completed the reconstruction of the historic Bellasis Flyover, one of Mumbai’s key east-west traffic arteries, in just 15 months and six days. Work had commenced on October 1, 2024, and the project was finished four months ahead of the original schedule, officials said.

BMC authorities credited the timely completion to strong coordination between multiple departments, including the Municipal Bridges Department and the Western Railway authorities. The work order had been issued in September 2024, and meticulous planning, phased execution, and continuous monitoring enabled smooth progress, despite challenges such as BEST bus relocations, legal clearances, and the ongoing monsoon season.

A BMC official said, “The early completion of the Bellasis Flyover demonstrates that complex infrastructure projects can be delivered ahead of schedule with strict planning, clear coordination, and efficient execution.” The phased work schedule ensured uninterrupted construction even during the monsoon, allowing the railway portion to be rebuilt by Western Railway while BMC handled girder bracing, deck sheet installation, and approach road construction simultaneously.

Final inspections and safety certifications were completed on January 6, and the flyover is set to open to traffic soon, pending issuance of the no-objection certificate (NOC) from the railway authorities. Once operational, it is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion in central Mumbai, benefiting thousands of daily commuters.

Originally built during the British era, the Bellasis Flyover spans 333 meters and connects important areas, including Tardeo, Nagpada, and Mumbai Central. The modernized structure now features a 7-meter-wide carriageway along with spacious footpaths on both sides, prioritizing pedestrian safety.

The reopening of the flyover is also expected to ease traffic on Jangir Boman Behram Marg, restoring a crucial connectivity route that had been disrupted for nearly two years during reconstruction.

With this successful project, the BMC has set a benchmark for timely execution of urban infrastructure works, showing that coordinated efforts and phased planning can overcome challenges while delivering critical public assets efficiently and safely.

This project highlights Mumbai’s continued focus on modernizing aging infrastructure while minimizing disruption to commuters, reinforcing the city’s commitment to better urban mobility and public safety.
