India Opt to Bowl First as Men in Blue Aim to Seal Series in Guwahati T20I

Guwahati, Jan 2026 : India won the toss and elected to bowl first in the third T20 International of the five-match series against New Zealand at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium on Sunday, underlining their confidence as they look to extend their dominance. The Men in Blue currently lead the series 2-0 after registering convincing victories in Nagpur and Raipur, and a win here would put them on the brink of an unassailable lead.

The series so far has reflected India’s growing strength and depth, particularly in the batting department. New Zealand, despite showing intent and competitiveness, have repeatedly found themselves outgunned. In the second T20I at Raipur, the visitors put up a strong fight, posting totals close to or beyond 190, yet those efforts were not enough to trouble an Indian side that chased with remarkable ease. Whether batting first or second, the Black Caps have struggled to maintain sustained execution across all phases of the game.

India, on the other hand, appear to be peaking at just the right time as preparations intensify for their home T20 World Cup defence. The previous match proved to be a major confidence booster, with skipper Suryakumar Yadav rediscovering his fluent touch, Hardik Pandya delivering a powerful all-round performance, and Rinku Singh once again excelling in the finisher’s role. India’s ability to chase down a target of 200 in under 16 overs highlighted not only their firepower but also the calm assurance running through the squad.

After winning the toss, Suryakumar Yadav explained the decision to bowl, noting that the wicket looked good for batting and that dew could play a significant role later in the evening. Emphasising his approach to leadership, the Indian captain summed up his message to the team succinctly: “Take calls, be humble.” His words reflected a team environment built on clarity, confidence and composure.

New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner, while acknowledging the disappointment of the previous loss, remained pragmatic in his assessment. “We batted well. With the ball, we came against a strong team. You take what you can and move along,” Santner said, adding that different conditions across cities demand fresh plans and renewed intensity.

The third T20I presents another opportunity for the visitors to translate their positive intent into a complete performance, while India will be eager to maintain momentum and assert their authority in front of a passionate Guwahati crowd.
