New Delhi, September 2026 : Delhi Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta came down heavily on the Opposition over its allegations against the Election Commission and the country’s electoral process. She said the Opposition’s intention was to mislead the public and create an atmosphere in which people’s attention was diverted from the development work being carried out in the country and Delhi, as well as the Opposition’s own failures, towards unnecessary controversies.
The Chief Minister said the country was moving forward on the path of development and governments were undertaking several important works in the public interest. At such a time, she said, the Opposition should speak to the people about its development model and policies instead of creating distrust towards constitutional institutions. Referring to Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi and other Opposition leaders, the Chief Minister said their statements were no less than treason and that cases of treason should be registered against them.
Was the Election Commission transparent during the Opposition’s tenure?
Speaking to reporters at Janseva Sadan on Sunday, the Chief Minister questioned the baseless allegations being levelled by Opposition leaders and asked whether the Election Commission had functioned with the same level of transparency during the Opposition’s tenure as it was demonstrating now by placing its processes and decisions before the public. She said it was not appropriate for the Opposition to create a baseless controversy on the basis of an article published in just one newspaper. The Election Commission, she said, had placed each issue before the public with complete transparency and clarified that the decisions had been taken unanimously. The Chief Minister said everyone had the right to ask questions in a democracy, but such questions should be based on facts. Merely making political allegations and damaging the credibility of a constitutional institution was not appropriate.
Election Commission has also clarified the position on Form-6
The Chief Minister also referred to the questions being raised by the Opposition over Form-6. She said the Election Commission had clarified that there had been no change in the original Form-6, which is used for the registration of new voters. A declaration related to the SIR process had been added separately. She said Form-6 and the related declaration for new voter registration were still available on the Election Commission’s citizen services portal. Keeping public convenience in mind, the electoral process was being made more organised and accessible, she said. The revision of electoral rolls is a regular process aimed at retaining eligible voters on the rolls and verifying, as per the rules, entries that have become ineligible due to death, relocation, duplication or other reasons.
Opposition should speak on voter lists with facts
On the Opposition’s allegations of ‘vote chori’, the Chief Minister said the process of updating electoral rolls involved identifying people who had died years ago, duplicate entries, voters who had shifted and other entries that had become invalid for various reasons.
She said ensuring that the names of genuine eligible voters remained on the electoral rolls while removing ineligible or duplicate names was a natural requirement of the electoral process. The Election Commission’s SIR process also has a prescribed procedure for verification of electoral rolls, as well as for claims and objections.
She questioned why the Opposition was troubled when the names of people who had died years ago, duplicate names or names of people who did not even exist were verified and corrected, bringing the genuine voters to the fore.

The Chief Minister said the Bharatiya Janata Party had received a clear mandate in the 2014 Lok Sabha election. She asked the Opposition who was handling the Election Commission’s system at that time and whether similar questions had been raised about the credibility of the Election Commission then. She said it was not appropriate to question the electoral system and constitutional institutions merely because election results did not turn out as expected. The Chief Minister said, “You may spread as much false propaganda as you want to mislead the people, but the people are watching everything. The people will answer each and every point. Lies have no legs.”

The Chief Minister said maintaining public trust in the electoral process was the responsibility of all political parties and leaders. If any political party had an objection to the electoral process, it should raise the matter through the prescribed constitutional and legal channels. According to the Chief Minister, repeatedly making allegations without concrete evidence and creating an atmosphere of distrust in the country was not appropriate for democracy. She also said activities that weaken public trust in constitutional institutions should be viewed seriously. The Chief Minister said the kind of activities being carried out by Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi and other Opposition leaders, and the kind of statements they were making, were, in her view, no less than treason. She said cases of treason should be registered against them.
Election Commission working impartially
The Chief Minister said political opposition had its place, but creating confusion among the public by questioning the credibility of the country’s democratic institutions and electoral process without sufficient basis should not be acceptable. According to the Chief Minister, the Election Commission was working to ensure the rights of eligible voters and make electoral rolls more accurate and up to date. She said the Commission had provided clarifications regarding decisions and procedures related to the SIR process. In a democracy, the people are supreme, and ultimately, people make their decision on the basis of facts, work and policies.
