Kolkata, Aug 2026: FMCG major Emami Group is preparing for a major expansion of its packaged food business, with the company planning to invest around ₹400 crore to establish a state-of-the-art food park in West Bengal. The proposed facility is expected to consolidate production, processing and packaging operations while strengthening the group's presence in India's rapidly expanding packaged food and snacks market.
The investment is also part of Emami's broader strategy to create a stronger growth platform for Emami Agrotech Ltd, its edible oil and food business, which is expected to explore an Initial Public Offering (IPO) in the future. The management believes that adding high-growth packaged food categories to its established edible oil business could improve the company's growth prospects and enhance its valuation potential ahead of a potential listing.
Emami Group Director Aditya Vardhan Agarwal said the company has approached the West Bengal government seeking approximately 22 acres of land for the proposed food park. The facility is expected to house modern manufacturing, processing and packaging infrastructure within an integrated campus.
The company has also proposed developing a new corporate headquarters in Kolkata by acquiring around 3-4 acres of land, with the objective of bringing its various offices under one roof and creating a more integrated corporate infrastructure.
Expanding Beyond Edible Oils
The proposed food park will be operated by Emami Agrotech Ltd, which has already established a presence in the packaged food segment. The company's existing portfolio includes products such as flour, gram flour, semolina, spices and soya chunks.
In recent months, Emami has also expanded into the snacks segment by launching a range of traditional Indian as well as Western-style snacks. At present, these products are manufactured through a combination of the company's own facilities and contract manufacturing plants.
Once the proposed food park becomes operational, Emami intends to shift a significant portion of its production activities to the integrated facility. This is expected to improve operational efficiency, streamline the supply chain and help the company respond more quickly to growing demand.
The expansion comes at a time when India's packaged food market is witnessing significant growth, driven by changing consumer preferences, urbanisation, rising disposable incomes and increasing demand for convenient and branded food products.
₹750 Crore Investment Planned for Snacks Business
Emami is also preparing to make a substantial investment in its snacks business. The group is working on plans to invest up to ₹750 crore in the segment as it seeks to establish a stronger foothold in the highly competitive packaged snacks market.
According to the company, the expansion could generate approximately 4,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities.
The group's strategy, however, is not limited to snacks. Once it establishes a stronger position in the segment, Emami plans to expand into additional categories such as sweets, bakery products and other packaged food offerings.
The broader product strategy is aimed at creating a diversified food portfolio that can provide multiple revenue streams and reduce the company's dependence on a single category.
IPO Strategy Linked to Food Diversification
The proposed expansion is also closely linked to Emami Agrotech's longer-term capital market ambitions. The company is already profitable at the EBITDA level, but the management believes that an edible oil-focused business could command a relatively limited valuation compared with a diversified food company with exposure to faster-growing consumer categories.
By expanding into packaged foods and snacks, Emami hopes to build a larger and more diversified business before considering an IPO.
Agarwal has indicated that the company's objective is not simply to launch an IPO but to create a business capable of delivering stronger long-term value to investors and shareholders.
The company is therefore expected to focus first on strengthening its packaged food portfolio, improving financial performance and establishing a stronger market position. Once the business reaches the desired scale and valuation, the IPO process could be taken forward.
Mixed Quarterly Performance
Emami's expansion plans come against the backdrop of mixed financial results. During the first quarter of financial year 2026-27, covering April-June, Emami Ltd's consolidated net profit declined by around 15 per cent to ₹138.94 crore, compared with ₹164.26 crore in the corresponding period of the previous year.
However, the company's operating revenue recorded strong growth. Revenue increased by around 15 per cent to ₹1,039.21 crore, compared with ₹904.09 crore a year earlier.
The company's total expenses also rose by approximately 18 per cent to ₹813.03 crore during the quarter. Higher raw material costs, marketing expenditure and investments associated with expansion exerted pressure on profitability.
Despite the decline in quarterly profit, the management remains optimistic about the company's long-term growth prospects. It expects product diversification, increased investment and expansion in packaged foods and snacks to support revenue and profitability over the coming years.
West Bengal Set to Benefit From Investment
The proposed food park could also provide a significant economic boost to West Bengal. Apart from the planned ₹400 crore investment, the expansion of Emami's snacks and packaged food operations is expected to create direct and indirect employment opportunities and generate additional activity across the supply chain.
An integrated food manufacturing facility could also help improve production efficiency, reduce logistical complexity and strengthen Emami's distribution capabilities in eastern India and other markets.
Industry observers believe that if Emami successfully executes its expansion plans, the company could emerge as a stronger player in India's competitive packaged food market. The proposed food park is expected to play a crucial role in this strategy by providing the infrastructure required to scale production and introduce new product categories.
The expansion marks an important step in Emami Group's broader transformation from a predominantly edible-oil-led business into a more diversified food company. By combining its existing strengths in edible oils with packaged foods, snacks, sweets and bakery products, the group is seeking to create a larger consumer-facing business with stronger growth potential.
For Emami, the proposed West Bengal food park is therefore more than a manufacturing project. It represents a strategic investment aimed at expanding its food portfolio, creating employment, improving operational efficiency and potentially laying the foundation for a more attractive valuation ahead of a future IPO.
