Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav outlined the state government’s efforts for the protection and promotion of cattle under the Chief Minister Jan Vishwas Abhiyan. He said the Madhya Pradesh Government is committed to the protection, conservation and proper management of cattle. Regular grants are being provided for the upkeep and management of more than 5.20 lakh cattle housed in 3,212 registered gaushalas across the state.
Chief Minister Dr. Yadav said the grant for the upkeep of cows in gaushalas has been increased to ₹40 per cow per day. A budget provision of ₹620.50 crore has been made for grant distribution to gaushalas during the financial year 2026-27. He said the government is giving special attention to providing the necessary resources for the effective functioning of gaushalas and proper care of cattle. The Chief Minister said a single-click Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system has been introduced to make the grant distribution process more transparent and convenient. Under the system, grants are transferred directly to the bank accounts of gaushalas, ensuring transparency, timely payments and good governance. He said that since the formation of the government, more than 1,000 new gaushalas have started functioning across the state, providing organised care and management for more than 2 lakh cows. He added that continuous efforts are also being made to ensure better animal care, breed improvement and effective management of gaushalas, along with cattle protection.
Chief Minister Dr. Yadav said there is a complete ban on cow slaughter in Madhya Pradesh, while legal provisions have been strengthened to effectively curb the illegal transportation of cattle. Vehicles used for illegal cattle transportation are also liable to be confiscated. The Chief Minister said community participation was equally essential along with government efforts for cattle protection. He said Govardhan Puja programmes are organised annually at gaushalas in all districts of the state to raise public awareness about the importance of cattle. Work is also underway to establish and operate large-scale gaushalas in urban areas.
