J.P. Nadda Undergoes Angioplasty at AIIMS, Remains Stable Under Observation

New Delhi, Aug 2026 : Union Health and Family Welfare Minister J.P. Nadda underwent an angioplasty at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and is currently stable and under observation, hospital authorities said on Tuesday.

According to an official statement issued by AIIMS, Nadda underwent the cardiac procedure on August 17 and is being monitored in the Department of Cardiology. The hospital said his condition remains stable but did not provide further details about the nature of the blockage or the specific findings that led to the intervention.

"Shri JP Nadda, Hon'ble Minister of Health and Family Welfare underwent angioplasty on 17th August 2026 and is stable and under observation in the Dept of Cardiology, AIIMS, New Delhi," the institute said.

Nadda was admitted to AIIMS on the evening of August 13 after complaining of uneasiness. Following an initial medical assessment, doctors conducted a series of investigations to evaluate his condition. He subsequently underwent a coronary angiography on August 14 as part of the cardiac evaluation.

Coronary angiography is a diagnostic procedure used to examine the arteries supplying blood to the heart. During the test, a thin catheter is inserted into an artery, generally through the wrist or groin, and guided towards the heart. A contrast dye is then introduced into the coronary arteries, allowing doctors to identify narrowed or blocked blood vessels through X-ray imaging.

Following the medical evaluation, Nadda underwent angioplasty on August 17. Also known as percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), angioplasty is a minimally invasive procedure used to restore blood flow through narrowed or blocked coronary arteries.

During angioplasty, doctors guide a catheter fitted with a small balloon into the affected artery. The balloon is inflated at the site of the blockage, helping widen the artery and improve blood circulation. In many cases, a stent may also be placed to help keep the artery open, depending on the patient's condition and medical requirements.

AIIMS has not disclosed details of the angiography results or provided information on whether a stent was inserted during Nadda's procedure.

Nadda, who has previously served as national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), currently holds the portfolios of Union Health and Family Welfare and Chemicals and Fertilizers in the Narendra Modi-led government.

Despite his hospitalisation, the minister had remained active in public affairs and government responsibilities in recent weeks. He has been involved in meetings related to healthcare programmes, medical infrastructure and policy initiatives across the country.

As Union Health Minister, Nadda oversees one of the key portfolios responsible for India's public health policies, healthcare delivery programmes and major medical initiatives. His current hospitalisation has drawn attention, although AIIMS has maintained that his condition is stable.

The minister will remain under observation in the cardiology department as doctors continue to monitor his recovery following the angioplasty. Further medical updates are expected from the hospital if required.
