Bishkek, Sep 2026 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday concluded his two-nation tour of Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan and departed for New Delhi after participating in the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek.
During his visit to Kyrgyzstan, PM Modi attended the SCO Summit hosted under the chairmanship of the Central Asian nation and held a series of bilateral meetings with leaders from participating countries.
On the sidelines of the summit, Modi met Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon and discussed ways to expand bilateral cooperation across various sectors. The Prime Minister said India remained committed to strengthening its partnership with Tajikistan and exploring new areas of cooperation.
Modi also held talks with Laos President Thongloun Sisoulith, focusing on strengthening bilateral ties between India and Laos. Following the meeting, Modi said the two leaders had a “great conversation” on boosting linkages between the two countries.
Ahead of the summit proceedings, Modi joined other SCO leaders for a group photograph. He was also seen interacting with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin before the leaders proceeded for the formal session.
The SCO currently comprises 10 member states — Belarus, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Azerbaijan and Armenia are listed as observer states, while the grouping also has dialogue partners including Egypt, Cambodia, Qatar, Kuwait, Laos, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Sri Lanka.
Modi's engagements in Kyrgyzstan began on Sunday after his arrival in Bishkek from Uzbekistan. He was warmly welcomed by members of the Indian community and also interacted with them during his stay.
On Monday, the Prime Minister held separate bilateral meetings with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. The discussions covered bilateral relations and areas of mutual and regional interest.
Modi also paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at his memorial in Bishkek and attended the opening ceremony of the World Nomad Games. He extended his best wishes to the Indian contingent participating in the sporting event.
The first leg of Modi's tour was Uzbekistan, where he held talks with President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. During his stay in Tashkent, he paid tribute to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri at the Shastri Memorial and visited the Mahatma Gandhi Centre at Tashkent State University of Oriental Studies.
The Prime Minister's two-nation tour focused on strengthening India's engagement with Central Asia and advancing cooperation through bilateral partnerships as well as the SCO framework.
