Washington, Sep 2026 : US President Donald Trump is set to host Chinese President Xi Jinping at the White House on Thursday, with Iran, trade, artificial intelligence and the cases of detained Americans among the issues drawing attention ahead of their high-level talks.
The meeting comes as Washington and Beijing seek to manage tensions over tariffs, technology restrictions and geopolitical issues while maintaining dialogue between the world's two largest economies. Xi's visit is his first to Washington in more than a decade and marks the leaders' third meeting since Trump returned to the White House.
Trump on Wednesday confirmed that Iran would be among the subjects he planned to discuss with Xi. Senator Ted Budd has separately called on Trump to address religious freedom and seek the release of detained Americans and religious figures in China.
The two leaders are also expected to discuss artificial intelligence, advanced technology and broader economic relations as both countries compete for technological influence while attempting to prevent further deterioration in bilateral ties.
The programme continues on Friday, when Trump and Xi, accompanied by their wives, are scheduled to have tea at the White House before visiting the National Archives. The visit is expected to conclude there.
While expectations for a major breakthrough remain limited, the summit provides an opportunity for Washington and Beijing to address contentious issues directly and maintain high-level communication.
