Seven Killed, Over 12 Injured in Stampede Outside Bihar’s Ashok Dham Temple

Lakhisarai, Aug 2026 : At least seven people were killed and more than 12 others injured after a stampede broke out outside the Ashok Dham Temple in Bihar’s Lakhisarai district on Monday morning, triggering panic among thousands of devotees gathered for prayers during the holy month of Sawan.

The incident occurred as a large crowd had assembled at the temple to observe the third Monday of the Shravan month and perform Jalabhishek to Lord Shiva. According to officials, a sudden surge in the number of devotees resulted in chaos outside the temple premises.

Lakhisarai District Magistrate Shailendra Kumar said the unprecedented rush was intensified by the arrival of two trains between around 6:30 and 6:45 am. The heavy influx of devotees reportedly led to the collapse of a barricade, after which the situation quickly became uncontrollable.

Initial reports also indicated that an electric wire had fallen, triggering panic among people in the crowded area. Rumours subsequently spread through the gathering, prompting devotees to rush in different directions. The sudden movement resulted in a stampede, with several people falling and becoming trapped beneath others.

The incident created chaos around the temple as devotees and local residents immediately launched rescue efforts. Police and administrative officials reached the spot soon after receiving information and began rescue and crowd-control operations.

The injured were taken to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. Officials remained at the site to supervise the rescue operation, manage the crowd and assess the situation. Authorities were also monitoring the area to prevent further incidents.

The Ashok Dham Temple, also known as Shri Indradamaneshwar Mahadev Temple, is a prominent religious site in Lakhisarai and houses a large Shivalinga. The temple attracts thousands of devotees, particularly during Sawan, when worshippers undertake special prayers and rituals dedicated to Lord Shiva.

The incident occurred on a particularly significant day for devotees, with the third Monday of Sawan traditionally drawing large crowds to Shiva temples across the country.

Sawan, also known as Shravan, is regarded as one of the most sacred months in the Hindu calendar. It generally falls during July and August and coincides with the monsoon season. Devotees observe fasts, offer prayers and perform various rituals seeking the blessings of Lord Shiva.

Many worshippers visit Shiva temples during the month to offer water and other sacred offerings, while several devotees undertake religious observances throughout the period.

The month is also associated with spiritual devotion, prosperity and auspicious beginnings. Several major festivals and religious observances occur around the Sawan-Shravan period, depending on the lunar calendar.

The Lakhisarai tragedy has raised concerns over crowd management and safety arrangements at major religious sites during periods of exceptionally high footfall. Authorities are expected to review arrangements at the temple and surrounding areas following the incident.
