Mumbai, Sep 2026 : India’s T20I captain Shreyas Iyer, Test and ODI skipper Shubman Gill, head coach Gautam Gambhir and Centre of Excellence (CoE) chief VVS Laxman arrived at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai on Thursday for a crucial review meeting on the senior men’s team’s recent performances and future plans.
The meeting is also being attended by senior BCCI officials, including President Mithun Manhas, Secretary Devajit Saikia, Treasurer Prabhtej Singh Bhatia and interim Chief Executive Officer Hemang Amin.
The review was originally scheduled for July and was expected to assess India’s disappointing results in the T20I series in England and Ireland, along with the team’s ODI series defeat to England. However, the meeting was postponed because of India’s subsequent T20I tour of Zimbabwe and the Test series in Sri Lanka. India returned from those assignments with contrasting but successful results, registering a 3-0 T20I series win against Zimbabwe and a 1-0 Test series victory in Sri Lanka.
According to sources familiar with the agenda, Thursday’s discussions are expected to centre on a detailed assessment of the senior men’s team’s recent performances, the lessons emerging from those campaigns and areas that require improvement.
Player fitness and workload management are also likely to receive significant attention. The team management and BCCI are expected to discuss injury concerns involving several key players, including seam-bowling all-rounder Hardik Pandya, whose recurring fitness issues have become a matter of concern ahead of India’s long-term commitments.
The meeting is also expected to look beyond immediate assignments and examine India’s preparation for several major tournaments and series. These include the upcoming multi-format tour of New Zealand, the home Border-Gavaskar Trophy series and the 2027 Men’s ODI World Cup.
Fitness concerns were highlighted further during Tuesday’s announcement of India’s squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Afghanistan. Jasprit Bumrah, Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana were named provisionally, with their participation subject to fitness clearances.
The status of Pandya is expected to be one of the key talking points. His absence following India’s successful 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup campaign on home soil has added to questions surrounding his immediate availability and long-term role.
Pandya remains an important component of India’s plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup because of his value as a seam-bowling all-rounder. However, a series of injury setbacks has complicated his availability and raised questions about his ability to consistently contribute in the physically demanding 50-over format.
His latest setback, involving a blow to the shin, has further intensified discussions about workload management, fitness monitoring and the need for suitable alternatives within the squad.
For the BCCI and team management, the review meeting provides an opportunity to take stock of India’s recent results while establishing a clearer roadmap for the next phase of the international calendar. With multiple major assignments approaching, selectors and coaches will be expected to balance immediate performance requirements with long-term player development and fitness.
The presence of the captains, head coach, CoE chief and senior BCCI leadership indicates that the discussions are likely to cover not only match results but also broader issues involving player availability, preparation, workload and succession planning.
With the 2027 ODI World Cup already emerging as a major strategic target, the meeting could prove important in shaping India’s approach to team composition, fitness management and preparation over the coming months.
