Dubai, Sept 2026 : Zimbabwe Cricket Chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani has been appointed as the new Deputy Chairperson of the International Cricket Council (ICC), with his term set to run until November 2027.
Mukuhlani, who represents Zimbabwe on the ICC Board, will succeed Imran Khwaja following his departure from the position. The appointment makes Mukuhlani the first Zimbabwean to serve as Deputy Chairperson of the ICC, marking a significant milestone for the country’s cricket administration.
Mukuhlani currently serves on the ICC’s Finance and Commercial Affairs (F&CA) and Nominations Committees. He also heads the ICC’s HR and Remuneration Committee. His experience in cricket administration and knowledge of the African cricket landscape are expected to contribute to the ICC’s work during a period of global expansion for the sport.
His appointment comes ahead of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027, which Zimbabwe will co-host with South Africa and Namibia. The tournament will mark the return of the men’s 50-over World Cup to Africa after 24 years.
Mukuhlani’s experience at Zimbabwe Cricket and his understanding of the region are expected to be particularly relevant as the ICC and its African members prepare for the global tournament.
Reacting to his appointment, Mukuhlani said he was honoured by the confidence placed in him by fellow ICC Board Directors and looked forward to contributing to the organisation’s objectives.
“I am deeply honoured by the confidence placed in me by my fellow ICC Board Directors and grateful for the opportunity to serve as Deputy Chair of the ICC,” Mukuhlani said.
He said he would work closely with ICC Chairman Jay Shah and fellow Board members to advance the organisation’s priorities, including expanding the game, creating opportunities for ICC Members and reaching new audiences and markets.
Mukuhlani also highlighted the broader developments taking place in international cricket, particularly the sport’s return to the Olympic Games and its continued expansion into new markets.
“Cricket is entering an exciting period, particularly with its return to the Olympic Games and continued global expansion,” he said, adding that he looked forward to supporting the ICC leadership in serving the interests of cricket globally.
ICC Chairman Jay Shah congratulated Mukuhlani on his appointment and highlighted his experience in cricket administration and understanding of the international game.
“I warmly congratulate Tavengwa Mukuhlani on his election as Deputy Chair of the ICC,” Shah said. He added that Mukuhlani’s experience, knowledge and commitment to the development of cricket would be valuable to the ICC Board.
Shah said Mukuhlani had earned the confidence of his fellow directors and expressed his intention to work closely with him to strengthen cricket across ICC Members and create greater opportunities for the sport’s growth worldwide.
The ICC Chairman also described Mukuhlani’s appointment as an important milestone for Zimbabwe, noting that he was the first representative from the country to occupy the Deputy Chairperson’s position.
With cricket preparing for its return to the Olympic Games and continuing to expand internationally, Shah said strong leadership would remain important for the sport’s development.
Mukuhlani’s new role will place him at the centre of the ICC’s administrative efforts during an important period that includes the 2027 World Cup in Africa and cricket’s growing global ambitions.
