Washington, August 2026 : US President Donald Trump has threatened military action against Oman if it obstructs Washington’s efforts to reach an agreement with Iran over the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, while also calling on Tehran to surrender amid escalating tensions in the region.
Speaking to Fox News journalist Trey Yingst, Trump reportedly warned that the United States would take military action against Oman if Muscat interfered with efforts to determine the future arrangements governing the Strait of Hormuz. Oman has been engaged in talks with Iran on the issue, while Washington is separately pursuing its own diplomatic efforts.
Trump also called on Iran to “put up the white flag of surrender,” according to Yingst, who shared details of his interview with the US President on social media. Trump reiterated that Iran must not be allowed to acquire a nuclear weapon, maintaining that preventing Tehran from developing nuclear weapons remains a key US objective.
The remarks came as tensions between Washington and Tehran remained high, with diplomatic efforts facing uncertainty. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said that a 60-day period associated with the June 17 memorandum between Iran and the United States was no longer relevant. He accused Washington of violating the commitments contained in the understanding shortly after it was signed.
The situation has also been marked by heightened military activity across the region. Yemen's army said it had detected the launch of two hypersonic ballistic missiles by the Houthi movement towards the southwestern city of Mocha and the Red Sea, adding to concerns over regional security and maritime routes.
In northern Iraq, two drones targeted the office of the Kurdistan Regional Government's Prime Minister. The KRG security agency said there were no casualties in the incident.
Meanwhile, Trump has also ordered changes to US military cooperation with South Korea. On Sunday evening, he said he had instructed the Pentagon to “substantially reduce” joint military exercises with the long-standing Asian ally.
Trump cited the cost of the exercises and South Korea's reported reluctance to participate in actions against Iran as reasons for the decision.
The latest developments reflect the widening geopolitical tensions surrounding Iran, the Strait of Hormuz and the broader Middle East, with diplomatic initiatives unfolding alongside increasingly forceful military rhetoric from Washington.
