Party questions investigation and filing of final report, seeks clarity from former government
Chennai, Sep 2026 : The ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on Wednesday sought an explanation from DMK president and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin over the handling of a POCSO case involving Gem Granites founder R. Veeramani during the previous government.
In a statement, the TVK alleged that the investigation into the case was allowed to weaken and questioned the circumstances under which a final report was filed. The party asked Stalin to explain the decisions taken when the DMK was in power.
The TVK questioned why action was allegedly not taken against Veeramani and raised questions about Stalin’s role as the trustee of the DMK headquarters, Anna Arivalayam. The party also alleged that the case had been “buried”.
However, the allegations made by the TVK did not include evidence establishing that Stalin personally intervened in the investigation or influenced its outcome.
The ruling party also raised questions over the role of former Tamil Nadu Law Minister S. Regupathy, particularly concerning video footage submitted in connection with the case.
According to the TVK, Regupathy had maintained that the footage was unclear. The party questioned whether this assessment had influenced the subsequent course of the investigation and sought an explanation for the decisions taken regarding the evidence.
“Under whose pressure did the then Law Minister Regupathy allow the investigation to be weakened? What was the reason?” the TVK asked in its statement.
The party further questioned the filing of the final report, alleging that it was submitted without a proper investigation. However, the statement did not provide details of the contents of the final report or identify any particular investigative decision that it wanted authorities to reconsider.
The TVK also questioned the DMK leadership’s silence on the matter and asked why the party had not publicly addressed the allegations surrounding the case.
“Who are you trying to protect through this silence? If there was no connection, should you not answer these questions openly?” the party said.
The latest statement has brought the handling of the POCSO case into the centre of a political exchange between the ruling TVK and the DMK. The questions raised by the TVK relate primarily to the conduct of the investigation, the handling of evidence and the circumstances surrounding the filing of the final report.
The case concerns allegations under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. The accusations made by the TVK do not, by themselves, establish wrongdoing by Stalin or Regupathy.
