CM Stalin Releases Coimbatore Master Plan 2041 Aimed at Sustainable Urban Growth

Chennai : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin today released the Coimbatore Master Plan – 2041, a comprehensive urban development blueprint covering an area of 1,531.57 sq. km, prepared by the Department of Housing and Urban Development through the Directorate of Town and Country Planning.

This marks the second Master Plan for the Coimbatore Local Planning Area. The first plan, covering 1,287 sq. km, was approved on December 10, 1994. With the urban landscape evolving, the updated plan received state government approval on January 13, 2024, and was subsequently published online to invite public feedback and suggestions.

Geographically Integrated and Data-Driven Planning

The Coimbatore Master Plan 2041 has been designed as a location-based, data-driven, and stakeholder-inclusive model, incorporating feedback from over 40 inter-departmental sources. The plan spans:

  • One Municipal Corporation (Coimbatore)
  • Four Municipalities (Valparai, Mettupalayam, Pollachi, and Gudalur)
  • 21 Town Panchayats
  • 66 Village Panchayats

The plan aims to offer a unified approach to city and rural development using advanced geospatial mapping and comprehensive stakeholder engagement.

Key Objectives of Coimbatore Master Plan 2041

The new Master Plan aligns with the Tamil Nadu government’s broader vision, including:

  • Making Tamil Nadu a $1 trillion economy
  • Developing sustainable and resilient cities
  • Ensuring 33% green cover by 2041
  • Advancing urban climate resilience

The Master Plan emphasizes:

  • Infrastructure improvement and expansion
  • Economic zone optimization
  • Housing access and affordability
  • Environmental conservation and green zone protection
  • Integrated planning and inter-departmental synergy

By mapping and integrating multiple departmental strategies into a single platform, the plan also provides a phased execution roadmap and cost estimates for each initiative. This structured approach ensures clarity in policy implementation and project funding.
