Explosive Drones Strike Kuwait’s Northern Border Posts, No Casualties Reported
Kuwait, April 2026 : Kuwait’s Ministry of Defence on Friday confirmed that two explosive drones originating from Iraq struck military posts along the country’s northern border, causing material damage but no loss of life.
In an official statement, the ministry said the early morning attack targeted two sites belonging to Kuwait’s northern land border centers. The drones, described as fiber-optic wire-guided explosive devices, were launched from Iraqi territory. Authorities termed the incident a “sinful aggressive attack” but noted that no human casualties were reported. “Praise be to God,” the statement added, underscoring relief that the damage was limited to infrastructure.
Security agencies and relevant authorities responded swiftly, implementing necessary measures to contain the situation and assess the damage. The ministry did not disclose further operational details but reiterated its commitment to safeguarding national security amid rising regional tensions.
The incident comes against the backdrop of heightened instability in the region. Just a day earlier, Kuwait’s civil aviation authorities announced the phased reopening of operations at Kuwait International Airport after a temporary suspension imposed on February 28 as a precautionary measure.
Director General of Civil Aviation Sheikh Humoud Mubarak Humoud Al-Sabah stated that Terminals 4 and 5 would resume operations from Sunday for select destinations. He emphasised that the reopening is being carried out in coordination with both domestic and international authorities to ensure the highest standards of safety and security.
Officials also confirmed that damage assessments at airport facilities—reportedly affected during recent regional hostilities—have been completed, and repair work is underway. Initial operations will be limited, with a gradual expansion planned as safety evaluations continue.
The drone strike follows a series of security incidents in recent weeks. Earlier in April, an armed faction based in Iraq, Saraya Awliya al-Dam, claimed responsibility for cross-border shelling incidents targeting Kuwait, Jordan, and Syria. On April 10, the Kuwaiti Army reported intercepting and neutralising seven hostile drones within a 24-hour period over its airspace.
Additionally, Kuwait had previously attributed attacks on key infrastructure, including a power and water desalination facility on March 30, to Iranian-linked aggression. That strike resulted in the death of an Indian worker and injuries to several personnel, alongside significant damage to critical installations.
The latest drone strike highlights ongoing security challenges in the Gulf region, as Kuwait continues to navigate external threats while working to restore normalcy in civilian and economic operations.
