Karnataka Congress Power Play Intensifies Amid Leadership Speculation
Bengaluru, April 2026 : Political activity within the Indian National Congress in Karnataka has intensified, with Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar camping in Delhi to meet senior leaders, while Chief Minister Siddaramaiah held a closed-door meeting with his supporters in Bengaluru. The parallel developments have reignited speculation over a possible leadership tussle within the state unit.
Party sources indicate that the controversy surrounding the Davanagere bypoll has created an opportunity for Shivakumar’s camp to act against leaders aligned with Siddaramaiah. At the same time, there are indications that the Chief Minister’s camp is preparing a counterstrategy to strengthen its position within the party.
Although both leaders have publicly projected unity through joint appearances and coordinated messaging, recent developments suggest that underlying tensions remain. Observers believe that the leadership debate, which had temporarily subsided, could resurface prominently after the bypoll results are announced.
In Bengaluru, Siddaramaiah convened a meeting with trusted ministers at a private venue on Cunningham Road. Senior leaders including Bhairati Suresh, G. Parameshwara, K. H. Muniyappa, Satish Jarkiholi, B. Z. Zameer Ahmed Khan, and Dinesh Gundu Rao were reportedly present. Discussions are believed to have focused on a possible Cabinet reshuffle and internal party matters.
Sources suggest that participants expressed concern over what they see as the targeting of the Chief Minister’s close aides and his perceived silence on key issues. Some leaders reportedly warned that unilateral decisions within the party could weaken senior leadership and alienate communities ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections. There were also calls for Siddaramaiah to take a more active role in addressing internal challenges.
Meanwhile, Shivakumar, speaking in Delhi, said he was unaware of the meeting held by the Chief Minister’s supporters and stated that he does not differentiate between who is “close” or not within the party. He hinted that a Cabinet reshuffle could be considered as the government completes three years in office, adding that “unexpected developments” may occur before May 20.
Adding to the political developments, Siddaramaiah’s son Yathindra Siddaramaiah asserted that his father would continue as Chief Minister for a full five-year term. In contrast, legislators aligned with Shivakumar have claimed that he is likely to take over the position within the current tenure, highlighting differing views within the party.
With the Congress high command now relatively free after elections in several states, Shivakumar’s visit to Delhi has further fuelled speculation about possible decisions. While both camps continue to emphasise unity publicly, the situation suggests that the Karnataka Congress may be entering a crucial phase in its internal politics.
