Kavitha Launches Telangana Rashtra Sena, Targets KCR and BRS Leadership

Hyderabad, April 2026 : In a significant political development, K. Kavitha on Saturday formally launched her new political party, the Telangana Rashtra Sena (TRS), marking her return to active politics after parting ways with the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) more than six months ago.

The announcement was made at a public meeting in Muneerabad in Medchal Malkajgiri district on the outskirts of Hyderabad. Kavitha’s move comes after her suspension and subsequent resignation from the BRS, a party led by her father and former Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao.

Interestingly, Kavitha has chosen the name Telangana Rashtra Sena with the acronym “TRS” — the same abbreviation originally used by her father’s party when it was founded as the Telangana Rashtra Samithi in 2001 to spearhead the Telangana statehood movement. The party was later renamed BRS in 2022 as part of an effort to expand its footprint nationally.

Her decision to revive the “TRS” acronym is politically significant, especially at a time when sections within the BRS are reportedly considering reverting to the original name after electoral setbacks in 2023 and the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Kavitha’s move is being seen as both symbolic and strategic, aimed at reconnecting with the emotional and historical identity associated with the Telangana movement.

In a strongly worded message shared on social media, Kavitha declared the formation of her party as a new beginning, asserting that the time had come for the people of Telangana to reclaim their voice. She projected the Telangana Rashtra Sena as a platform committed to protecting the aspirations of the state’s citizens.

Addressing supporters at the launch event, Kavitha launched a direct and sharp attack on KCR, stating that he is no longer the leader people once believed in. She accused him of failing to stand by farmers, the poor, and other vulnerable sections during times of crisis. In a striking remark, she described her father as having become “like a robot,” alleging a loss of political sensitivity and maturity.

She also criticised KCR’s recent statements blaming the public for the party’s electoral defeats, saying such comments reflected a disconnect from the ground reality. According to her, the leadership’s focus on expanding political influence in other states came at the cost of neglecting Telangana’s own people.

Kavitha further alleged that she was sidelined and eventually forced out of the party for raising concerns about corruption, particularly in the Kaleshwaram irrigation project. She claimed that those responsible for irregularities were shielded rather than held accountable.

Turning her criticism toward her brother and BRS working president K. T. Rama Rao, Kavitha questioned his leadership capabilities and accused the party of being driven by a narrow agenda focused on maintaining family control. She suggested that internal power struggles had overtaken the party’s original mission.

Expressing regret over her past association, Kavitha said she felt ashamed of being part of a leadership that, in her view, had deviated from its founding ideals. She apologised to the people of Telangana and pledged to rebuild a political platform rooted in social justice, transparency, and dignity.

Kavitha declared that her new party would challenge all major political forces in the state, including the Congress, BRS, and the Bharatiya Janata Party. She positioned the Telangana Rashtra Sena as a credible alternative that would prioritise inclusive governance and equitable development.

She also criticised national and regional parties alike, alleging that their agendas were driven by individual ambitions rather than public welfare. According to her, the Congress is focused on elevating its central leadership, while the BRS is preoccupied with internal succession politics. She further accused the BJP of failing to safeguard Telangana’s interests at the national level.

Recalling her earlier role in the Telangana movement, Kavitha highlighted her work through the cultural organisation Telangana Jagruthi, which she said played a key role in mobilising support for statehood. She reiterated her commitment to carrying forward that legacy through her new political venture.

Before launching the party, Kavitha performed religious rituals at her residence in Banjara Hills along with her husband Anil Kumar and sought blessings from leaders of various faiths, signalling an inclusive approach as she embarks on her new political journey.

With the formation of the Telangana Rashtra Sena, Kavitha has set the stage for a fresh political contest in Telangana, potentially reshaping the state’s political landscape in the months ahead.
