Gujarat and Maharashtra Day Celebrated with Warm Wishes from National Leaders

New Delhi, May 2026 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday extended warm greetings to the people of Gujarat on the occasion of Gujarat Day, highlighting the state’s rich heritage, entrepreneurial spirit, and significant contribution to India’s development journey.

In a message shared on social media, Modi described the day as a celebration of Gujarat’s vibrant culture and historical legacy. He praised the dynamic and enterprising nature of its people, expressing confidence that the state would continue to scale new heights of progress in the years ahead.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also conveyed his greetings, calling Gujarat a land of glorious history, cultural richness, and unique entrepreneurship. He noted that the state has played a crucial role in nation-building—from the freedom movement to economic development—and has embodied the spirit of unity and self-reliance. Invoking the blessings of Lord Somnath, Shah wished prosperity and happiness for the people of the state.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel extended greetings to Gujaratis across the globe and reflected on the state’s remarkable journey of growth and transformation. He credited visionary leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel for shaping Gujarat’s identity and values. Patel emphasized that the state continues to stand as a symbol of peace, progress, and good governance, contributing significantly to India’s overall growth story.

He further highlighted Gujarat’s ambitions to emerge as a global leader in sectors such as green energy, semiconductors, and emerging technologies. Calling for collective efforts, he urged citizens to work together toward the vision of a developed Gujarat that contributes to a developed India.

Observed every year on May 1, Gujarat Day marks the formation of the state in 1960 after it was carved out of the erstwhile Bombay State. The occasion is celebrated with various cultural programmes and events that showcase the state’s identity, heritage, and achievements.

Meanwhile, leaders across the country also extended greetings on Maharashtra Day, celebrated on the same day to mark the creation of Maharashtra in 1960.

President Droupadi Murmu conveyed her heartfelt wishes to the people of Maharashtra, describing it as a land that inspires patriotism, courage, and self-respect. She paid tribute to iconic figures such as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Jyotirao Phule, Savitribai Phule, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Gopal Krishna Gokhale, and B. R. Ambedkar, noting their immense contributions to society and nation-building.

Prime Minister Modi, in a separate message, also greeted the people of Maharashtra, acknowledging the state’s long tradition of social reform, cultural richness, and leadership across diverse sectors such as literature, cinema, industry, and science.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh described Maharashtra as a land of courage, innovation, and cultural heritage that continues to play a vital role in India’s growth. Union Ministers Dharmendra Pradhan and Hardeep Singh Puri also extended their greetings, praising the hardworking spirit and enduring values of the state’s people.

Maharashtra Day commemorates the formation of the state following the reorganisation of Bombay State in 1960. The historic moment was marked by the unveiling of the state’s map by Jawaharlal Nehru along with Yashwantrao Chavan. Since then, May 1 has been observed as a public holiday, celebrated with parades, cultural events, and official ceremonies, particularly in Mumbai’s Shivaji Park.

Both Gujarat Day and Maharashtra Day stand as reminders of the rich cultural diversity, historical legacy, and progressive spirit that continue to shape India’s growth story.
