Varun Chakaravarthy Leads KKR Fightback as SRH Bowled Out for 165 After Blazing Start

Hyderabad, May 2026 : A disciplined bowling performance led by Varun Chakaravarthy helped the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) restrict the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to 165 all out in 19 overs at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Sunday, despite a fiery start from the home side.

After being put in to bat, SRH openers Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head came out with aggressive intent, putting the KKR bowlers under early pressure. KKR’s decision to open the bowling with Sunil Narine did not yield immediate results, as SRH collected nine runs in the first over.

The momentum surged in the second over when Travis Head attacked Vaibhav Arora, smashing four boundaries in quick succession. Abhishek provided solid support, rotating the strike efficiently as SRH raced to 37 runs in just three overs.

KKR struck back in the fourth over when Karthik Tyagi dismissed Abhishek Sharma for 15 off 10 balls. However, Head continued his aggressive stroke play, taking on Cameron Green with three consecutive boundaries. Ishan Kishan then joined the onslaught, hitting a four and a six as SRH finished the powerplay strongly at 71/1.

Head brought up a rapid half-century in just 22 balls, but KKR gradually tightened their grip. The breakthrough came when Head, attempting another big shot, was caught at deep mid-wicket for a brilliant 61 off 28 balls, an innings studded with nine fours and three sixes.

The dismissal marked a turning point. KKR capitalised on the momentum as Cameron Green removed Heinrich Klaasen cheaply, while Rovman Powell took a sharp catch. Debutant Smaran Ravichandran failed to make an impact and fell to Varun Chakaravarthy, who then struck again to dismiss Aniket Verma, triggering a collapse in the middle order.

Ishan Kishan tried to anchor the innings, playing a steady knock of 42 off 29 balls, including four boundaries and two sixes. However, his dismissal in the 16th over by Sunil Narine — who also reached the milestone of 200 IPL wickets — further dented SRH’s hopes of posting a bigger total.

The lower order failed to recover as wickets continued to tumble. Anukul Roy dismissed Pat Cummins with a return catch, while Vaibhav Arora removed Shivam in the following over. Karthik Tyagi wrapped up the innings by dismissing Harshal Patel in the 19th over.

Varun Chakaravarthy emerged as the standout performer with the ball, finishing with impressive figures of 3/36 in four overs. Karthik Tyagi and Sunil Narine supported well with two wickets each, while Cameron Green, Vaibhav Arora, and Anukul Roy contributed with one wicket apiece.

After a flying start, SRH’s innings unraveled under sustained pressure from KKR’s bowlers, leaving them with a competitive yet chaseable total.

Brief Score:
Sunrisers Hyderabad – 165 all out in 19 overs (Travis Head 61, Ishan Kishan 42; Varun Chakaravarthy 3/36, Karthik Tyagi 2/30, Sunil Narine 2/31) vs Kolkata Knight Riders.
