Tensions Escalate in Strait of Hormuz as Iran Claims Strike on US Warship, Washington Denies
Tehran, May 2026 : Rising tensions in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz took a sharp turn on Monday after Iran’s elite naval force claimed it had struck a US warship, a claim that was swiftly denied by American officials.
According to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy, a US Navy frigate attempting to pass through the Strait near the southern port city of Jask was targeted with two missiles after allegedly ignoring warnings from Iranian forces. The semi-official Fars News Agency, citing local sources, reported that the vessel was hit and subsequently forced to retreat from the area.
However, the claim was quickly contested by the United States. A senior US official, quoted in a report by Axios, denied that any American ship had been struck, calling into question Iran’s version of events and adding to the uncertainty surrounding the incident.
The development comes amid heightened friction over control and access to the Strait, one of the world’s most critical energy corridors. Iranian authorities have repeatedly asserted that no vessel can transit the waterway without prior approval from Tehran, warning that violations would invite decisive military action.
US President Donald Trump, speaking a day earlier, said that the United States would assist ships stranded in the region and ensure their safe passage through the Strait. His remarks signalled Washington’s continued commitment to maintaining open navigation in the waterway despite escalating tensions.
In response, Iran’s central military command, Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, issued a stern warning, stating that any foreign military forces—particularly US forces—attempting to approach or enter the Strait would face direct attack. The warning, reported by the official Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), underscores the increasingly confrontational posture adopted by Tehran.
The standoff traces back to late February, when Iran tightened control over the Strait following joint US-Israeli strikes on its territory. Since then, Tehran has restricted the movement of vessels linked to the United States and Israel, significantly disrupting maritime traffic.
Meanwhile, the United States imposed its own countermeasures after post-ceasefire negotiations held in Islamabad in mid-April failed to produce an agreement, further complicating the situation.
With both sides exchanging strong rhetoric and conflicting claims, the situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains volatile, raising concerns over the stability of global energy supplies and the risk of a broader regional confrontation.
