TVK Government Faces First Assembly Test as Tamil Nadu Elects Speaker and Deputy Speaker
Chennai, May 2026 : The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay is set to face its first significant political test in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on Tuesday with the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker.
The ruling party has nominated senior leader J.C.D. Prabhakar for the post of Speaker. A seasoned politician and three-time legislator, Prabhakar joined TVK ahead of the Assembly elections after a long stint in the AIADMK and quickly emerged as one of the key strategists behind the party’s organisational expansion and election manifesto.
The 73-year-old veteran leader was elected from the Thousand Lights Assembly constituency in Chennai and is widely expected to secure the Speaker’s post without major resistance due to the ruling alliance’s comfortable numbers in the House.
For the Deputy Speaker’s position, TVK has fielded Ravi Shankar.
The ruling alliance, which includes TVK, the Congress, Left parties and several supporting allies, currently commands the support of nearly 120 MLAs in the 234-member Assembly, placing the government in a strong position during the election process.
However, the Speaker’s election carries greater political significance because of the growing internal turmoil within the opposition AIADMK, which is facing a possible split after its disappointing performance in the recently concluded Assembly elections.
The AIADMK managed to win only 47 seats and is now witnessing an escalating leadership battle between former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami and senior party leader S.P. Velumani.
According to party sources, nearly 30 AIADMK MLAs have extended support to Velumani and are demanding that he be recognised as the leader of the legislature party. At the same time, 17 MLAs continue to back Palaniswami, intensifying the crisis within the opposition ranks.
Sources indicate that both factions have already submitted separate letters to the Assembly Speaker’s office staking claim to the leadership of the AIADMK legislature party.
In this politically sensitive situation, the decision taken by the new Speaker regarding recognition of the official opposition leadership is expected to have major implications for the future direction of the AIADMK.
Political observers believe the ruling TVK government will closely watch the evolving opposition dynamics, as divisions within the AIADMK could strengthen the government’s position during its early months in office.
The developments come at a crucial time for the newly formed TVK administration, which emerged as the single largest party in the Assembly and subsequently formed the government with support from several parties that were previously aligned with the DMK-led alliance.
The Speaker and Deputy Speaker elections are therefore being viewed not merely as procedural exercises, but as an early indicator of the political equations that may shape Tamil Nadu’s legislative landscape in the coming months.
