India Successfully Test-Fires Agni-1 Ballistic Missile from Odisha
New Delhi, May 2026 : India on Friday successfully conducted the test launch of the short-range ballistic missile Agni-1 from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur, according to the Ministry of Defence.
The Ministry said the launch successfully validated all operational and technical parameters of the missile system. The test was conducted under the supervision of the Strategic Forces Command, which is responsible for managing the country’s strategic nuclear assets.
Officials described the launch as successful, with the missile performing according to mission objectives during the trial.
The Agni missile series forms a crucial part of India’s strategic defence capabilities and has been developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The successful test further strengthens India’s indigenous missile programme and strategic deterrence capabilities.
The Ministry also referred to the successful launch of the intermediate-range Agni-Prime missile carried out on September 24, 2025, by DRDO in collaboration with the Strategic Forces Command. That launch was conducted from a specially designed rail-based mobile launcher under a full operational scenario.
Agni-Prime, regarded as a next-generation missile system, is capable of striking targets at a range of up to 2,000 kilometres and incorporates several advanced technological features.
The rail-based launcher used during the Agni-Prime test was described as a first-of-its-kind system capable of moving across the rail network without special operational requirements. Officials said the launcher provides cross-country mobility and allows missile deployment within a short reaction time while maintaining reduced visibility.
The system is also equipped with advanced communication systems, protection mechanisms, and independent launch capabilities, making it a highly mobile and survivable strategic platform.
According to the Defence Ministry, the missile trajectory during the Agni-Prime launch was tracked by multiple ground stations, and the mission met all designated objectives in what officials called a “textbook launch.”
The successful trials are expected to pave the way for the future induction of advanced rail-based missile systems into India’s armed forces.
Senior scientists from DRDO and officers from the Strategic Forces Command witnessed both launches.
The road-mobile version of Agni-Prime has already been inducted into service after completing multiple successful flight tests in recent years.
Following the successful launch, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the Strategic Forces Command, and the armed forces. He said the rail-based canisterised launch system places India among a select group of nations possessing such advanced strategic missile-launch capabilities.
