Malaysia PM Anwar Ibrahim Congratulates Tamil Nadu CM Vijay, Plans India Visit for BRICS Summit
Kuala Lumpur, May 2026: Anwar Ibrahim on Friday spoke with C Joseph Vijay and congratulated him once again on assuming office as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
Sharing details of the conversation on social media platform X, Anwar Ibrahim described Vijay as a friend and wished him success in leading the state.
“I had a conversation and caught up with my friend, CM Vijay, today and once again extended my congratulations on the great responsibility he is shouldering for the people of Tamil Nadu,” the Malaysian Prime Minister said.
During the discussion, Ibrahim also informed Vijay about his upcoming visit to India in September to attend the BRICS Summit 2026, where he is expected to hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Anwar added that he may also make a short visit to Tamil Nadu if circumstances permit during his India tour.
“I also informed him that I will be traveling to India in September to attend the BRICS Summit and hold a meeting with PM Modi, and if the opportunity arises, I will make a brief visit to Tamil Nadu,” Ibrahim stated.
The Malaysian leader further wished Vijay strength and wisdom in carrying out his responsibilities as Chief Minister and expressed hope for the continued progress and prosperity of Tamil Nadu under his leadership.
This marks the second public congratulatory message from Anwar Ibrahim to Vijay within less than two weeks following the Tamil Nadu Assembly election results.
Earlier on May 12, Ibrahim had warmly congratulated Vijay on his electoral victory and highlighted the longstanding cultural and historical ties between Malaysia and Tamil Nadu. Referring to Vijay’s popularity as an actor before entering politics, Ibrahim remarked that audiences had watched him defeat “corrupt politicians and villains” on screen for years, but now the people had entrusted him with a far greater responsibility in real life.
He had also referenced Vijay’s political slogan “Oru Viral Puratchi” or “one-finger revolution,” saying it was on the verge of creating history in Tamil Nadu politics.
Anwar had then emphasised the strong people-to-people relationship between Malaysia and Tamil Nadu, noting that both share deep cultural, historical, and social connections spanning generations.
India is set to chair BRICS in 2026 under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” The theme reflects a people-centric and humanity-first approach articulated by Prime Minister Modi during the 17th BRICS Summit held in Rio de Janeiro in 2025.
The upcoming summit is expected to witness discussions on global economic cooperation, trade, innovation, and strategic partnerships among member nations.
