Marco Rubio Begins India Visit, Focus on Quad, Energy Cooperation and Strategic Ties

Washington/New Delhi, May 2026 : US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Kolkata on Saturday morning to begin his four-day official visit to India, marking his first trip to the country since assuming office last year. The visit is being viewed as a significant step in strengthening the growing strategic partnership between India and the United States amid shifting global geopolitical and economic challenges.

Rubio was received by senior officials upon arrival and is expected to travel to several Indian cities, including Agra and Jaipur, during the course of his visit. According to US Ambassador Sergio Gor, the US Secretary of State is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi later in the day in New Delhi for high-level discussions covering defence, trade, energy security and regional cooperation.

The visit comes at a crucial time as both nations seek to expand collaboration in the Indo-Pacific region and address challenges arising from global supply chain disruptions, tensions in West Asia and evolving security dynamics.

Welcoming Rubio to India, Ambassador Sergio Gor shared a message on social media platform X, expressing optimism about the visit and the future of bilateral ties.

“Honored to welcome my friend Secretary Rubio to India. We have an ambitious agenda ahead, including the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, focused on advancing the President’s vision for an even stronger US-India partnership. Looking forward to meaningful conversations and concrete progress together,” Gor stated.

During his stay, Rubio is expected to hold bilateral talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Sunday. The discussions are likely to focus on regional security, defence cooperation, technology partnerships, trade expansion and energy collaboration.

A key highlight of the visit will be Rubio’s participation in the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting scheduled to be held in New Delhi on May 26. India is hosting the important gathering, which will also be attended by Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi.

The Quad grouping, comprising India, the United States, Australia and Japan, has emerged as a major strategic platform aimed at ensuring a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific region. The upcoming meeting is expected to deliberate on maritime security, resilient supply chains, critical technologies, cybersecurity and regional stability.

Ahead of his departure for India, Rubio emphasised the importance of strengthening energy ties with New Delhi, particularly in light of concerns over disruptions in global oil and gas supplies linked to tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking to reporters in Miami before leaving for India, Rubio said the United States was prepared to significantly expand energy exports to India.

“We want to sell them as much energy as they are willing to buy,” Rubio said while referring to concerns over energy supply disruptions affecting India and other countries. He noted that the US was currently witnessing historic levels of energy production and exports and was keen to deepen cooperation with India in this sector.

Rubio also revealed that discussions on enhanced energy cooperation between the two countries were already underway and would continue during his visit.

“We have already been discussing ways to do more together. There are significant opportunities ahead,” he said.

Describing India as a vital strategic partner, Rubio highlighted the growing depth of cooperation between Washington and New Delhi across multiple sectors.

“There is a lot for us to work on with India. They are a great ally and a great partner. We already cooperate closely on many important issues,” he stated.

He further underlined the significance of the Quad partnership, calling it an important pillar of regional cooperation and stability.

“We will also meet with our Quad partners there, which is extremely important,” Rubio added.

The visit is expected to further strengthen diplomatic, economic and strategic engagement between the world’s two largest democracies as both countries seek to expand cooperation across defence, trade, energy and Indo-Pacific security initiatives.
