Punjab Kings Opt to Bowl First Against LSG in Crucial IPL 2026 Clash

Lucknow, May 2026 : Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to bowl first against Lucknow Super Giants in a high-stakes Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 encounter at the BRSABV Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Saturday. With their playoff hopes hanging by a thread, Punjab entered the contest knowing that only a victory could keep them alive in the race for the knockout stage.

Punjab Kings made two changes to their playing XI, bringing in South African all-rounder Marco Jansen and pacer Vijaykumar Vyshak in a bid to strengthen both their bowling attack and lower-order depth. The side has endured a difficult stretch in recent weeks, remaining winless in their last six matches. However, despite the disappointing run, Punjab still retain a mathematical chance of qualifying for the playoffs.

For Punjab Kings to stay in contention, they must defeat Lucknow Super Giants convincingly and also improve their net run rate above Kolkata Knight Riders. In addition, they would need Rajasthan Royals to lose their upcoming match against Mumbai Indians on Sunday.

The two sides had met earlier this season in New Chandigarh, where Punjab Kings registered a dominant 54-run victory over Lucknow Super Giants. Speaking after the toss, skipper Shreyas Iyer acknowledged the pressure surrounding the game but said the team was excited about the challenge.

“It is suddenly exciting. It’s like a do-or-die game for us and we are looking forward to the challenge. We haven’t really been in this kind of situation before in the league table, but the boys are super excited and eager to see how things unfold,” Iyer said.

Lucknow Super Giants captain Rishabh Pant revealed that the home side would also have preferred to bowl first on what he described as a good batting surface. Pant said the Ekana pitch looked ideal for stroke play and hinted at the possibility of a high-scoring contest.

LSG handed a debut to left-arm pace all-rounder Arjun Tendulkar, while Arshin Kulkarni and senior pacer Mohammed Shami also returned to the playing XI. Mitchell Marsh was unavailable for the fixture.

“This wicket is good for cricket, regardless of whether you bat or bowl first. It is one of the better batting wickets and could turn into a high-scoring match,” Pant said.

Reflecting on Lucknow’s campaign, Pant admitted it had been a difficult season for the franchise but insisted the team would continue to fight hard in their remaining matches.

“It has been a tough season, but there have been a lot of learnings for the team and personally as well. I would like to apologise to the fans who have supported us throughout the season. We will still give our hundred percent today,” he added.
