Trump Praises PM Modi, Calls India ‘Trusted Friend’ During Surprise Live Address at Delhi Event

New Delhi, May 2026 : US President Donald Trump on Sunday praised India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a surprise live video call at an event in New Delhi marking the 250th anniversary celebrations of the United States Declaration of Independence.

In his brief but warm interaction, Trump described himself as a “big fan” of Prime Minister Modi and said relations between India and the United States had never been stronger.

The surprise call took place during a commemorative event attended by senior Indian and American officials, including US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is currently on a four-day visit to India, and India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. The event was hosted by US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor.

Sharing details of the interaction on social media platform X, Ambassador Gor said Trump personally called during the celebrations and conveyed a strong message of support for India and Prime Minister Modi.

“President Trump called me tonight. He had a clear message: ‘I love Prime Minister Modi. We’ve never been closer to India. I’m a big, big fan of Prime Minister Modi,’” Gor wrote in his post.

In another message, Gor described the event as a celebration of the enduring friendship between India and the United States. He highlighted the participation of Rubio, Jaishankar, and other dignitaries while describing the gathering as a tribute to the values of liberty, innovation, and democratic partnership shared by both countries.

During the live call, Trump greeted the audience warmly and reiterated his admiration for Prime Minister Modi.

“I just want to say hello to everybody. I love the Prime Minister. PM Modi is great; he is my friend,” Trump said.

Addressing the Indian people directly, the US President emphasised the growing closeness between the two nations and assured continued American support for India.

“You are great. We have never been closer to India, and India can count on me and our country 100 per cent. If they need any help, they know where to call,” Trump remarked.

He also referred to the economic performance of the United States, saying America was witnessing record growth and a strong stock market under his leadership.

“We are doing well. We are setting records. We have a record economy, a record stock market,” he added.

Further underlining his support for India, Trump stated, “Anything India wants, they will get. I am a big, big fan of Prime Minister Modi.”

Before concluding the interaction, Trump once again called it an honour to speak with the gathering and send his greetings to Prime Minister Modi.

The remarks came at a significant moment in India-US relations, coinciding with Marco Rubio’s ongoing visit aimed at strengthening strategic and economic ties between the two countries.

According to diplomatic sources, Rubio also extended an invitation from President Trump for Prime Minister Modi to visit the White House in the near future.

Speaking at a joint media briefing with Jaishankar earlier in the day, Rubio expressed optimism over ongoing trade negotiations between the two nations.

“We’ve made tremendous progress, and I think we’re going to wind up with a trade agreement between the US and India that is going to be enduring and beneficial to both sides,” Rubio said.

He added that both governments were working towards an agreement that would protect national interests while strengthening long-term economic cooperation.

The latest remarks by Trump and the high-level diplomatic engagement are being viewed as signs of renewed momentum in India-US relations, with both nations looking to further expand their strategic partnership across multiple sectors.
