Abhishek Banerjee’s Parents Move Calcutta High Court Against KMC Notice on Alleged Illegal Construction

Kolkata, June 2026 : The parents of Trinamool Congress General Secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee have approached the Calcutta High Court challenging a notice issued by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) regarding alleged illegal construction at their residence on Harish Chatterjee Street in south Kolkata.

Amit Banerjee and Lata Banerjee have filed a petition before the High Court, asserting that the property located at 29-C, Harish Chatterjee Street was constructed legally and in accordance with approved norms. They have sought the quashing of the KMC notice, contending that the civic body has wrongly raised questions about a structure that was built following due procedures.

According to legal sources, the matter is expected to come up before the vacation bench of the Calcutta High Court next week.

The development comes amid an ongoing controversy surrounding notices issued by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation to properties linked to Abhishek Banerjee and his firm, Leaps and Bounds. The civic body has sought documents and clarifications regarding several properties located in the Kalighat and Harish Mukherjee Road areas of Kolkata.

Speaking to the media recently from his residence on Kalighat Road, Abhishek Banerjee questioned the basis of the KMC notice and demanded clarity regarding the alleged deviations mentioned in the communication.

He argued that the notice referred to a “brief of deviation” but did not specify the nature or location of any alleged violation. According to him, no supporting attachment or detailed explanation was provided by the civic authorities.

“Those who issued the notice and selectively leaked it to the media should explain what the deviation is. The notice asks for a brief regarding deviation, but no details have been attached. If there is any issue, they should clearly identify it. I have already submitted a written reply and will also seek legal remedies,” Banerjee had said.

Shortly after his remarks, his parents moved the High Court challenging the municipal notice.

The issue is part of a broader inquiry initiated by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation concerning properties registered in the names of Abhishek Banerjee, his relatives, and entities associated with him. Municipal authorities have reportedly sought approved building plans, construction records, and permissions related to additions or modifications made to these properties.

Earlier, Leaps and Bounds, a firm linked to Banerjee, sought an extension of 10 days from the civic body to furnish the documents requested by the Building Department. In a written communication to the corporation, the company expressed its willingness to cooperate with the inquiry and provide all relevant information but requested additional time to compile and submit the required records.

Municipal sources indicated that the notices were issued under Section 401 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation Act. The notices call for the submission of sanctioned building plans and other construction-related approvals to verify whether any work was carried out beyond what had been officially permitted.

While initial reports suggested that notices had been issued for two properties, subsequent media reports claimed that as many as 17 properties had come under scrutiny. Some reports also alleged that certain properties owned by relatives of Abhishek Banerjee were included in the list being examined.

Responding to those reports, Banerjee maintained that any allegations should be supported by specific details. He reiterated that unless authorities clearly identify the portion of any building that is allegedly unauthorised, it would be difficult to provide a meaningful response.

The case has now moved into the legal arena, with the High Court expected to examine the validity of the notice and the claims made by Banerjee’s parents regarding the legality of the construction. The outcome of the proceedings could have significant implications for the ongoing municipal inquiry into the properties under scrutiny.
