From Forests and Hills to the Swimming Pool: Summer Sports Camp Gives Baiga Children New Wings

Summer Sports Training Camp

Children from the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG) are learning swimming skills from national-level coaches

Chhattisgarh Government’s tribal welfare initiatives are helping nurture sporting talent in remote forest regions

Raipur, June 2026 : Under the leadership of Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, the Chhattisgarh Government continues to make meaningful efforts to identify and nurture the talents of children from remote and tribal areas. As part of this commitment, a district-level Summer Sports Training Camp in Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi district is opening new avenues of opportunity for children from the Baiga community, one of India’s Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs).

For Baiga boys and girls, who have traditionally grown up amid forests and hills, the camp is providing an entirely new experience. By learning modern swimming techniques in a professional swimming pool, these children are finding fresh inspiration and new directions for their dreams.

The Sports and Youth Welfare Department has organized this special training camp at the municipal swimming pool in Pendra. Children from the Baiga community living in remote forest areas of the aspirational block of Gaurela have been given priority in participation. District administration officials personally visited villages to motivate families and encourage children to join the camp.

Building Confidence Through Opportunity

For children accustomed to natural water bodies such as rivers, streams, and ponds, training in a modern swimming pool is a unique experience. Beyond learning how to swim, the camp is helping them develop discipline, confidence, and a competitive sporting spirit.

Participants said they had never before practiced in such a large swimming facility. They expressed excitement about learning the technical aspects of swimming and shared aspirations of becoming accomplished athletes in the future.

Guidance from National-Level Coaches

The camp features training sessions conducted by experienced national-level coaches, who are introducing the children to advanced swimming techniques and competitive disciplines.

Participants are receiving structured training in:

  • Freestyle
  • Backstroke
  • Butterfly stroke
  • Breaststroke
  • Medley events

The sessions are conducted twice daily, in the morning and evening, focusing on improving physical fitness, technical skills, and overall athletic performance.

According to the coaches, Baiga children possess natural physical strength, courage, endurance, and a strong willingness to learn—qualities that can help them excel as future athletes if given the right opportunities and guidance.

A Major Step Towards Tribal Empowerment

Children from the Baiga community often grow up in challenging geographical conditions, which contribute to exceptional stamina and physical resilience. With access to proper training, resources, and support, they have the potential to compete successfully at state, national, and even international levels.

The district administration’s initiative to connect these children with mainstream sports is not only a milestone in sports development but also a powerful example of social inclusion and tribal empowerment.

Tribal Youth a Key Government Priority

The Chhattisgarh Government has been actively expanding opportunities in education, sports, healthcare, and skill development across tribal regions. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai has emphasized that no talented child should be left behind due to a lack of resources or opportunities.

The inclusion of Baiga children in organized sports activities reflects the government’s commitment to inclusive development. The initiative is helping shape their personalities, broaden their horizons, and instill the confidence needed to pursue ambitious goals.

A New Wave of Dreams

Children who once spent their lives largely confined to forests and hilly terrain are now confidently challenging the waters of a swimming pool and imagining brighter futures. This transformation is the result of a combination of government support, administrative commitment, dedicated coaching, and the determination of the children themselves.

The Summer Sports Training Camp has emerged as a golden opportunity for Baiga children—one that has the potential to change the course of their lives. The vision behind the initiative is that, in the years ahead, these young athletes will represent Chhattisgarh and India on national and international platforms, bringing pride to their communities and the nation.
