PM Modi’s Historic Slovakia Visit Set to Open New Chapter in Bilateral Ties

New Delhi, June 2026 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to undertake a landmark state visit to Slovakia on Sunday at the invitation of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the Central European nation since its independence in 1993.

The visit is being viewed as a significant milestone in India-Slovakia relations and is expected to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors, including trade, investment, automobile manufacturing and railway infrastructure.

During his visit, Prime Minister Modi will hold delegation-level talks with his Slovak counterpart Robert Fico and also meet Slovak President Peter Pellegrini. The discussions are likely to focus on expanding economic engagement and exploring new avenues of collaboration between the two countries.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the visit would reaffirm India’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with Slovakia across diverse sectors and provide fresh momentum to the relationship.

India’s Ambassador to Slovakia, Apoorva Srivastava, described the visit as historic and emphasized its broader significance beyond diplomatic engagement.

“This is a historic and important visit. It is the first trip by an Indian Prime Minister since Slovakia’s independence in 1993. The visit will not only strengthen political relations but also boost economic cooperation, security partnerships and people-to-people contacts,” she said in an interview.

According to Ambassador Srivastava, Prime Minister Modi is also expected to interact with chief executives of several leading Slovak companies during the visit. The engagement is aimed at enhancing business ties and encouraging greater investment flows between the two nations.

Several Slovak firms have already established a presence in India, while business exchanges between the two countries have gathered momentum in recent years. Over the past three years, multiple Slovak business delegations have visited India to explore trade and investment opportunities.

The visit also comes at a time when Slovakia is increasing its engagement with the Indo-Pacific region. In December 2025, Slovakia unveiled its Indo-Pacific strategy, highlighting the importance it attaches to economic, technological and political cooperation with countries in the region, including India.

Ahead of the visit, Slovak President Peter Pellegrini welcomed Prime Minister Modi, describing the trip as an opportunity to elevate bilateral ties.

“Dear Prime Minister Narendra Modi, I look forward to welcoming you in Bratislava. Your historic visit will build on our good dialogue from New Delhi and open new opportunities for Slovakia–India cooperation,” President Pellegrini wrote on X.

Following the Slovakia visit, Prime Minister Modi will return to France to participate in the G7 Summit in Evian on June 16–17, where he is expected to engage with leaders of G7 nations, partner countries and international organisations.

On June 18, the Prime Minister will travel to Paris for further bilateral engagements and attend the VivaTech Summit, Europe’s largest technology and startup event, underscoring India’s growing role in global innovation and technology ecosystems.
