Iran Announces Peace Deal Framework with US, Hormuz Strait Set to Reopen

Tehran, June 2026 : Iran on Monday announced major developments in its ongoing engagement with the United States, including the lifting of the US naval blockade, plans to sign a peace memorandum of understanding (MoU), and the reopening of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi said that the US naval blockade against Iran would be lifted from Monday night, alongside an immediate and permanent cessation of military operations across all fronts, including Lebanon.

According to reports carried by Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency, Gharibabadi stated that Iran and the United States are expected to sign the final draft of a peace MoU in Switzerland on June 19.

Tasnim also quoted sources as saying that the Strait of Hormuz—one of the world’s most critical energy transit routes—would reopen following the signing ceremony. The waterway handles a significant share of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas shipments, making its reopening particularly significant for international energy markets.

Iran’s state-run IRIB TV, also citing Gharibabadi, reported that Tehran’s participation in a 60-day negotiation period with Washington on its nuclear programme and sanctions relief would depend on the United States fulfilling its preliminary commitments. Iranian authorities would verify those commitments before formally entering the next phase of talks.

The developments came after Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on social media platform X that the United States and Iran had reached a peace agreement following intensive diplomatic efforts. Sharif said both sides had agreed to the “immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon,” and that mediators would facilitate further meetings aimed at implementing the agreement.

Shortly afterwards, US President Donald Trump declared on Truth Social that the US-Iran peace deal was “now complete.” Trump also announced the toll-free reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the immediate lifting of the US naval blockade on Iranian ports.

Despite the apparent diplomatic breakthrough, questions remain regarding regional implementation of the agreement. Israel’s Ma’ariv news outlet, citing Israeli sources, reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu informed Trump during a phone conversation that Israel did not consider itself bound by provisions related to Lebanon in the US-Iran understanding.

The emergence of the agreement came as a surprise, particularly after Iran’s Supreme National Security Council had issued a warning on Sunday evening over an anticipated response to an earlier Israeli strike on Beirut.

Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, secretary of the council, was quoted by IRIB TV as saying: “Lebanon is our lifeblood, and any violation of Iran’s red lines will not be tolerated.”

The latest developments signal a potentially significant shift in regional dynamics, although the durability and implementation of the proposed agreement remain closely watched by the international community.
