Ireland Head Coach Heinrich Malan Steps Down After Historic T20I Series Triumph Over India

Belfast, June 2026 : Ireland men’s cricket head coach Heinrich Malan has announced that he will step down from his position, bringing an end to a highly successful tenure that transformed the fortunes of Irish cricket. The announcement came on Monday, less than 24 hours after Ireland scripted history by defeating India 2-0 in a T20 International series, their first-ever bilateral T20I series victory against the Asian giants.

Malan, whose contract was due to run until early 2027, informed players and support staff of his decision, describing it as part of a planned transition aligned with Ireland’s preparations for the next ICC Men’s ODI World Cup cycle. His departure marks the conclusion of more than four years in charge after taking over as head coach in March 2022, succeeding Graham Ford.

During his tenure, Malan oversaw one of the most successful periods in the history of Irish men’s cricket. Under his guidance, Ireland qualified for three successive ICC T20 World Cups, secured their first three victories in Test cricket, expanded the country’s pool of international-standard players and achieved several memorable wins against leading cricketing nations.

The crowning moment of his reign came on Sunday when Ireland completed a landmark 2-0 T20I series victory over India in Belfast, adding another milestone to an already impressive record.

Reflecting on his time with the national team, Malan expressed gratitude to the players, coaching staff and the wider Irish cricket community for their unwavering support.

“It has been an absolute privilege to work with these players, staff and the wider Irish cricket community. My family and I have had a wonderful experience living here, and we will always look back on our time in Irish cricket with great affection,” Malan said in his farewell statement.

Looking back on the team’s achievements, he highlighted several historic moments that defined his tenure.

“On the field, we can take immense pride in our achievements, including the memorable T20 World Cup victory over England in Melbourne, our first-ever Test victory against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi, our maiden home Test win over Zimbabwe in Belfast and now the historic home T20I series victory against India. We also recorded significant victories over Pakistan, West Indies and South Africa while consistently qualifying directly for T20 World Cups through our performances against the world’s top teams,” he said.

Malan thanked everyone associated with the national side for embracing a common vision.

“Thank you to the players, coaches and support staff for believing in our shared vision. It has been a very special journey, and I leave knowing Irish cricket has a bright future ahead,” he added.

Cricket Ireland confirmed that Malan’s departure is part of a carefully planned succession strategy designed to ensure continuity ahead of the 2027 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup qualification campaign. The governing body believes appointing a new head coach before the upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan in August will provide valuable time for the incoming coach to establish systems and prepare the squad for the crucial World Cup Qualifiers scheduled for early 2027.

Cricket Ireland’s Director of High Performance, Graeme West, praised Malan’s contribution and acknowledged the lasting impact he has had on the national programme.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed working alongside Heinrich over the past two years and sincerely thank him for his outstanding contribution. He joined us during a challenging period and played a pivotal role in taking the Ireland men’s team forward. From World Cup qualifications and historic Test victories to broadening the depth of our playing group, his influence has been immense,” West said.

He explained that discussions over recent months regarding Ireland’s long-term planning led to a mutual understanding that this was the appropriate time for a leadership transition.

“As we discussed preparations for the upcoming World Cup Qualifier cycle, Heinrich indicated that he felt this was the right stage to step aside. That decision aligns with our objective of ensuring continuity as we build towards the qualification campaign. His efforts to strengthen the talent pipeline will continue to benefit Irish cricket for many years,” West added.

Cricket Ireland will now begin the search for Malan’s successor as the team prepares for a new chapter with the goal of building on the strong foundation established during one of the most successful coaching tenures in the country’s cricketing history.
