Gujarat Giants Opt to Bat Against Mumbai Indians in High-Stakes WPL 2026 Clash
Vadodara, Jan 2026 : A high-pressure encounter unfolded at the BCA Stadium, Kotambi, on Friday as Gujarat Giants won the toss and elected to bat first against Mumbai Indians in a decisive Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026 match. With a playoff berth on the line, the contest effectively turned into a knockout, as the winner would seal qualification for the next stage of the tournament.
Gujarat Giants, currently placed second in the WPL standings, entered the match with confidence in their overall campaign but with one notable concern — they are yet to register a win against Mumbai Indians, who sit just behind them in third place. Despite this, the Giants chose to back their strengths and fielded an unchanged playing XI, signalling trust in the combination that has brought them success so far this season.
Explaining the decision to bat first, Gujarat Giants captain Ashleigh Gardner emphasised the importance of focusing on the present rather than past results. She described the match as a virtual quarter-final and stressed the need for strong performances in both batting and bowling. Gardner highlighted that her side has consistently started innings well and believes setting a competitive total could be the key to victory.
“We just need to focus on the matches we’ve won,” Gardner said. “When we play really good cricket, we win matches. What’s done is done, and now it’s about what we do tonight. We’ve put up good scores at the start of our innings throughout the season, and we want to do the same here and defend it with the ball.”
Reflecting on their previous outing against Mumbai Indians, Gardner pointed out that Gujarat Giants had posted a strong total of 190 runs, even though they failed to defend it. She noted that the team has drawn several positives from that match and believes this encounter offers a fresh opportunity to change their head-to-head record.
Mumbai Indians captain Harmanpreet Kaur, meanwhile, said she would have preferred to bowl first and was pleased when the toss went her team’s way. She underlined the importance of a strong start with the ball, particularly during the powerplay overs.
“We wanted to bowl, and I’m happy we got the chance to do that,” Harmanpreet said. “If we can take early wickets, it will put us in a very strong position. Every match is a new match, and every day is a new day. We may have a good record against Gujarat, but that doesn’t matter unless we play good cricket today.”
Harmanpreet also stressed that her side is treating the game with the seriousness it deserves, knowing that one strong performance could secure their place in the playoffs. She reiterated that the focus remains on executing plans rather than relying on past success.
Both teams named strong line-ups for the crucial encounter. Gujarat Giants’ XI features Beth Mooney behind the stumps, supported by experienced internationals Sophie Devine, Ashleigh Gardner, Georgia Wareham and Renuka Singh Thakur, along with a balanced mix of all-rounders and bowlers. Mumbai Indians, on the other hand, boast a formidable combination led by Harmanpreet Kaur, with key players such as Hayley Matthews, Nat Sciver-Brunt, Amelia Kerr and Shabnim Ismail forming the core of the side.
With playoff qualification at stake and two evenly matched teams facing off, the clash promised intensity, high-quality cricket and a defining moment in the WPL 2026 season.
