Deputy CM Eknath Shinde Orders Emergency Traffic Plan for Mumbai-Pune Expressway After Gas Tanker Accident

Mumbai, February 2026: Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has taken serious note of the massive traffic congestion caused by a gas tanker accident at Bor Ghat on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, which caused significant inconvenience to commuters. He has directed the MSRDC and police to prepare a special emergency traffic plan for the expressway to prevent such incidents in the future.

The accident caused the tanker to overturn, leading to a leak of flammable propylene gas. The risk of a major disaster required immediate traffic management, diverting vehicles to the old highway. MSRDC and police teams worked tirelessly for 20 hours to control the gas leak. Deputy CM Shinde acknowledged the inconvenience faced by travelers and assured that authorities, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and experts from Bharat Petroleum, Hindustan Petroleum, and Reliance, were mobilized to contain the situation.

During the incident, MSRDC provided drinking water and biscuits to stranded commuters. Shinde instructed that no tolls should be collected until traffic returned to normal.

The Deputy CM also highlighted that the Mumbai-Pune Missing Link project is in its final stage and directed the department to complete it urgently, which will shorten travel distances and provide an alternate route during emergencies. He held detailed discussions with MSRDC and police officials to ensure a comprehensive emergency traffic plan is implemented for the expressway.
